Commencement of the Second Kegis- tration. ‘To-day, the Foard of Registration resamed Me session in the Criminal Court room, City Mail, for the purpose of adding to the lists the names of those who have not heretofore been Tegistered in the several legislative districts, and striking from the lists those not entitled to register. A temporary table has been con- structed nearly the entire width of the court- room. at which are seated the members of the board. each attending to applicants from two districts, with the assistance of a cierk—the | number of every two districts being logibiy | marked above register for those two dis- tricts. Quite a large crowd was present on the open- ing; bat the larger proportion seemed to be pre- sent merely asspectators. The number regis- ‘ering was not solarge as was expected, and those registered embraced about equal num- bers of colored and white voters. In ali the Catholic churches the Consecrated Host was taken from the main altar this morning at the end of mass, and deposited in a side repository, beautifully decorated and lighted with hundreds of candles, where ft will remain until Holy Saturday commemorative of the body of oar blessed Lord resting in the tomb. The main altars in all Catholic churches were stripped of all their ornaments this morning after the re- moval of the Sacred Host. No bells will be Turg OF organ sounded to-day or to-morrow, the services being of the most impressive and solemn character. To-morrow is Good Friday, commemorative of the crucitixion of our Ke- deemer, and upon this day therolemn adoration of the Cross is —— At this ceremon: the congregation, clergy taking the proceed to the altar, and, bending before a cru- eifix, Kies it in token of their veneration. A meeting of Germans was called at Odd Fellows’ Hall last night by the democratic mane agers in order to give Mr. Merrick an opporta- rity to explain as to certain remarks of hix at the French sympathy meeting at Lincoln Hall, im which he is-reported to have commented un- favorably on the course of the Germans in France. Mr. Louis Schade called the meetin, to order, and Mr. A. Eberly was elected presi- dent, with George Wiliner, Charles Klomav, i = Dr. Fred. Schmidt, George Juene- mann, Charles Mades, Christian Ruppert, Fer- dinand Schlegel, George Emmet, George Car!, Jobn Ardeeser, B. Geier, John Howard. Gustay Kablert, Christian Lederer, Fred. Heider, Her- mann Richter, Frederick Volk aud John’ Wal- ker, vice presidents. Mr. Schade, chairman of the committee on Fesolutions, reported @ series declaring that while they are willing to give every child with- out regard to race or color a substantial educa- tion they are opposed to mixed schools, that while the radical candidate and the convention have kept an ambiguous silence regarding the question, the democrats and conservatives have removed all doubts by inscribing on their ban- ners their desire that black shal] remain black, and white remain white, and that they are against any mixing of the racesin the public schools, as that only will lead to amalgamation, That in Mr. Merrick they have fou: who will carry out those principles and defend the rights of the adopted citizens, now so often srsailed and disregarded by the party in power, and they will give him their most ty sup- yort. . Mr. Eberly delivered @ short address on taking the chair, during which Mr. Merrick entered the hall,’and after music by the Ma- Tine Band he was introduced, and said he ap- peared at the request cf German citizens to vindicate bis position toward them. He dented that he had spoken at the Frencii fair, but acknowledged that he did addrees a meeting at Lincoln Hall toafford material sympathy for France. He denied thatbe had insulted the German or any other nationality at that meet- ing, but did hope on that occasion that Freoch liberty would penetiate into Germany.
