Few are aware of the magnitade of the oyster trade; and some statistics may perhaps be ad- vantageously introduced here. The number of vessels engaged in taking oysters in the waters of Maryland with scrape, drag and dredge, is from £30 to 560. These vessels (pungies as they are called,) carry an average load of 1,000 bushels, and make perhaps, two trips to marlet each month. This gives a monthly ag; ate of 1,060,000 to 1,120,000 bushels, or 10,000,000 bush- els per season of mne months. To this large yield must be added the oyster product, taken by 3.200 canoes, which scrape or tongue frem the shallow waters, an a eof 450 bushels each during the oyster season—a total of 1,480,000 Dushels, about three-fonrths of which are sold to vessels engaged in the carrying trade. This give a total yield of nearly 12,000,000 bush- els trom the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake, any its tributaries alone for a single season. ‘The waters of that part of Chesapeake Bay lymg within the limits of Virginia are — by about » vessels. ‘These vessels employ more than 5,000 men, and take yearly from the beds betweep 9,000,000 and 10,000,000 bushels of oysters, which are shipped to Bosion, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. The local consumption is, of course, but » small per centage of the enormous total yield, ‘or distant communities have arare apprecia- ton of — from the waters of the Chesa- peake. Packed in barrels or in hermetically sealed tin cans, Chesapeake oysters are shipped to the Pacific coast, the West Indies—and, in- deed, to every quarter of the civilized globe. SUGGESTIONS. It maybe su; whether it would not be .advisable to empower the trustees, by law, to Teteivé boys from adjoining counties in Mary- land and Virginia upon such terms a8 the board may see fit to impose. By the act of May 6, 1876, boys may be committed to the school for six months or a longer period, and a number have been sent for the shortest term. The board feel it incumbent upon them to’ say that do not think It advisable that any boy be sent to the school fora less period than one year, and fia! in rare instances. If they Jeave the school at the end of six; months, they return to their former haunts and fal! into old habits. It ts better in alt cases that boys should be sent to remain until they are twenty-one years of age, unless sooner dis- charged by the board, who will then have it in thei ind any boy out as an appren- ‘ade should ha ‘e tt and they should deem it expedient. A iarge portion of the time of the boys will be devoted to labor of some kind, either farming, gardening, frnit culture, or mechanical oceupations. There is a class of boys who might be preserved from rutn, by bag ope to the Reform School, but for whom the law does not clearly provide; boys who are destitute of homes, who have nelther parent nor guardian, and no one te come forward and pay 1.50 per week for their ee and who cannot be taken into the fully tiny ih end such alteration of the law as will provide for this class, the expenses of their sup- port to be paid by the citvor county where they are found wandering. In conclusion, the board that under the care and management of Mr. Howe, as superintendent, and of Mrs. Howe, as matron, the school has more than met their expectations; and request the Secre- tary to ask of Congress, in addition to the sum of 10,000 necessary to defray the ordinary ex- penses, the sum of $30,000 for the erection of two additional buitdings, rendered necessary by the numbers sent to the school. EDUCATION OF THE nOYs. E ‘The superintendent, Mr. F. W. Howe, says in his report that the education of the boys, both physical and intellectual, is receiving due at- tention. Each boy attends school half of the @ay and labors the other half. The boys are classed into two divisions, one of which goes to the school-room to study, while the other gocs to the field to labor. The five hours of school- Ingeach day is developing them rapidly, and there seems to be a growing desire on the part of many to ire a business education, and this desire is tivated and encour: d by the teachers. A library of good books is much needed. BUILDINGS. It wil very soon be absolutely necessary for the schoo] to be provided with more ample ac- commedations in the way of buildings.
