Versaities, Oct. 8, afternoon.—Lest night the entire garrison of Metz, including the Na- tional Gnard, made a sortie to the north, on both banks of the Moselle. on the entrenched position of the Germans, which was repulsed, when they returned to the fortress, with a loss of 1,510 men. The Prussian lors was 6 men. Loxpox, Oct. 8—A special corre -pondent of the Tribune, before Metz on the 7th, telegeaphs as follows This afternoon, at one o'clock, Bazaine made ad perate attempt to break through the Prus- sian environment in the direction of Thionvilic. ‘the Frussians on the previous even driven the French from the village of Ladom- champs, and had establ'shed forep 2sts in Stre- nig, Petites and Grand Etapes and Me Ba- zaine. under cover of a fog, advanced his troops, and commenced an , annihilating the forepost: and th-vwing of men on their supports. When had been occupied, Bazaine sent ee body of troops on the right, close +> the Moselle, which advanced up the valley until checked by the Prussian can non from both sides of the river, and finally stopped by two landwehr brigades of the tenth armv corp:, which occu & posi- tion opp< ite to Grand and Petites Etapes, and who distinguished themselves greatly. A fusileer batcilion of the Fifiz-eightn land webr regiment was nearly exterminated. Othe battalions of the same regiment and the Fitty- ninth landwebr asc) suffered severcly. Finally at 429, the French were ¢riven back from al their poritions by a neral advance of the land army corp’. There wa s. Gen. Vou ec »*th landwehr division, was wounded by my side. The Pras- sian victory was complete. The loss in killed and wounded was considerable, but it was hea’ on the French side. The French sent out their feld artillery and infani y, supported by the forts of St. Julien and St. Eloy. The whole Prussian tenth and third army corps and landwehr divisions were engaged. The general commanding was Von Voight, of thetenth army corps. The French simultancously feigned an attackon Vantry,Chieulle, Charley and L’Orii to the northeast of Fort St. Julien, which was repulsed. The same correspondent telegraphs from Noi-seville, on the 8th inst..4 a. nt: The French during the night accumulated tn large mares on the eastern slopes of St. Julien, towards Met The Pra-cian forepost< were «drawn back and the reserves called up. Artil-ry covers every eminence. Shells from St. -lulien go crashing into Noisse- ville. A furious cennonading is going on to the south by Colombey, Merco le Haut and Pet- tie. The French fort at St. Privat is also firing. CARLSEUNHE, ct. 1L—The following has been received by the Duke of Baden: We won an en- gagement pear Stremy, not far trom Moutmedy, on Sator lay, with one French corps of the line and Mobiles. It was a glorious day for the Badeners. PRUSSIAN KEPULSE AT ST. QUENTIN. L , Uct. 9, via London.—St. Quentin ts now open, the National Guard and townspeople having gallantiy withstood an attack by 7,20) Prussians. Prefect Anatole la Farge bade the people to rise en masse and defend the place. He then assembied the laborers and armed them from the gunsmiths’ shop" and marched out-ide the city.
