Charles Downing, of Boston, a son of the well known colored caterer in this city, and Georgine Jacobs, a handsome octoroon, moving in the upper circles of colored society in the Federal Metropel's. having formed a warm attachment for each other, desired to get married, but their withes were opposed by an aunt of the bride, with whom she resides. The you! people, however, had no idea of having their happiness interfered with, and at for a private marriage on Thursday evening last, intending to leave here on the 9 o'clock p. m. train on a wedding tour. Miss Georgine informed her aunt Thursday afternoon that ste intended to accompany the young man to the theater that evening, and the aunt gave her consent. Late in the afternoon the prospective groom, with a friend, called on the City Kegister (Mr.Jobn F. Cook) at his residence, corner of 16th and K streets, for a license, thinking the officer who issued business licenses also issued matrimonial permit, The Kegister not being at home at the time of these calls, the applicants were told to call again, and at the same time they inti- mated that the hour of etight had been set for the ceremony, and mentioued the name of the prospective bride. In a short time the Register returned to his home, and his family related to him what had occurred, and he, in the goodness of his heart, ’and not wish- ing the partes to be disappointed, walked to the residence of the aunt of the bride in order to tell them that he was not the proper efficer to issue the license, and also to inform them that Mr K. .J. Meigs, the clerk of the court, who was the officer they needed, might be found at bis residence, on New Jersey avenue. ‘On arriving and ringing the door bell, the aunt, accompanied by the blushing candidate for matrimonial honors, appeared, when Kegister Cook, roticing that the girl appeared somewhat embarrassed, attempted to turn the matter off. The cunt, however, had heard enough to have her suspicions aroused, and pressed the a] for an explanation, and he was finally luced, much against his will, to tell all he knew of the proposed marriage. In some places Ee‘ bas found deeper water than before the freshet, but im others the channel! bas filled op to some extent. It is the opinion of Maj Aj that there is a larger amount of deposit to be to make the channel 12 feet at low tide than there was before the freshet? All gt the buoys were washed away last week, but new ones are being added as fast as the soundings are made. The bids for cleaning out the chan- wel, opened a short time before the freshet, and publiched in Tue Stax at that time, have been considered, and it was determined to award the contract to J. G. Dodge; but if it be Le = that the recent food bas changed the depth of the channel, making it necessary to remove a larger Bmeunt of deposit, new bids may be invited. ‘The matter will be determined next week. —<— ConxTRACTS AwarpEp.—Yesterday the fol- lowing contracts x sewers were awarded by Mayor Emery Kandall, sewer throzg! square 515; ing, L street, trom 10 to Mth, and in 15th street, above L; John Vieh- New York avenue to th street, from LtoM. ‘If these parties do not appear promp!- ly and enter into contract with bond tne work Will be given to other bidders without delay.
