Similar neglect has been shown in the collection of water rents, and when Mr. Crane, the new Water Kogistrar, entered upon his duties, om the 23d of June, he found upwards of ene thousand houses in arrears for water rent, ranging from six months to four years. ‘The water fund proves to be utierly swamped through wanton disregard of the law keeping it entirely separate from other fands. There is nominally a balance to the credit of the water fund at this tume ef $57,966.03; but it seems that every penny of thissum has been absorbed in the Bowen maelstrom. At any rate the eor- por m bank of deposit has construed the Bowen overdrafts of $2000 as raking in the water-fund deposit, amd new refuses to honor checks on the water’ fund.
