Samuel Ceas, which was postponed from last Tucsday, wes resumed yesterday afternoon before Justice J. C. Walker, on 4% siseet. Cook bein sick, put another man on the work name Young, in his place who answered to Cook's mame at rojl-eal!, and also for himseif. S. A. Douglass testified that Cook called on him for an order, but he could not remember for what amount; that Ganneil drew the order. ard Mr. Boker figured up what was to be paid on it avd banded it to Mr. Cear, who counted out the money and handed ‘it to witress, rho parsed it through the wi to Ceo! business then was in the capacity of assistant commisssoner and to sce that the laborers got justice done them. Cook asked him to get Ceas to cash the order for him. Cers was paying 85 cents on the do! Could not recollect how much wes due iff, nor how much he received. Alder- an Baker was in the room to figure up what ‘Was to be paid on each order, and would call out the amounts, when Ceas would count out the money and hand it to witness, who passed it Out of the window to the men without re counting. Baker was seated next to Ceas t> see that evecything was fairly done. Mr. Ceas here produced the order in question, with Cook's en nt. and stated that ithad been paid him in full, with other orders, in cor- poration certificates, the market value of which a5 now ** cents on the dollar. S.S. baker testified to being present at the office ot Commiesioner Gunnell to protect the men and expediate business so that the men should get some money; made the calculations what wes due; Ceas counted out the money—5 ¢ents on the dollar—which was handed to Deng- las, who paste, it to the men. Samuel Ceas testitied that he remembers when the name Wm. F. Cooh was culled out, seme one im the room asked if it was Cook of the City Hall. which produced some laughter at the time. He stated that his object in cashing these orders was not t9 make money, but solely to aid in the election of Mr. Bowen. Ih is morey was paid on Saturday prior to the June election. ‘The evidence cloved, and Mr. McConnell made an argument :howing up the cgi rd of the Bowen ring, and the manner of diddling the colored laborers out of their hard earned wages. Mr. Hine, counsel for defendant, declined answering. and the case wes submitted to the Jrstice, stated that the hour being late, about 10 o'clock p. m., that he would reserve b's dec'sion until to-day. Sentevs Grxxmnc Accipent.—About noon yesterday William Timothy U’Connell, residin, on North Capitol sireet, between G@ and i and engaged as a bar-keeper at Gibeon’s restaurant, near the Northern Liberty Market, met with an accident while out gunning near Benning’s bridge, which cost him his right leg. It appears that while standing near a house just nd Berning’s bridge, having just come off the marsh or prepaiing to go there, he was bis gun when the barrels fell off the stock, and, striking the ground, one barrel was discharged, driving the contents through his leg above the ankle. The bone was com- pletely shattered and nearly all the flesh carried away. He wes removed to his home, where h's d was bound up, ro that he could be taken to Providence ee, to_ which place he was removed at 5o’elock yesterday afvernoon. A novel suit wes before Justice Drury yester- day, wherein the plaintifl sues for recovery of house rent due, and defendant puts in a bill in bar. The agreement, it appears, was that the party renting, £. E. House, a clerk in the W Dcpartment, agreed to take the house at $4 per th, and after the first month to pay in ad- vance, which he failed to do. Whereupon Geo. T. ACCIDENT AT A QvARRY.—About 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon an accident occurred at Hughes) quarries near Lyon's Mills, which came well nigh proving serious. Two colored men, named Gabriel Jones and Wm. Chandlee, were engaged in loading a cart, when, suddenly the embankment came down, almost burying the two men and tle horse and cart. They were, however, soon extricated, theonly injuries being bad bruises and cuts trom the falling fragments of stone. Jobnson was tried at Fairfax Court House on Tuesday last for rape, and sentenced to ten years continement in the penitentiary. Love, one ot the the three comm’ssion- ers in chancery forthe County Court of Fair- fax Couny, has resigned, and T. R. Love has been appointed to till the vacancy.
