Gatchell, in the chair and E. I. Booream, secretary. ‘Dr. Maron reported that the laws and statutes for the government of the association had not yet been printed, as Gen. N. P. Chipman, chairman ot the committee, was absent. He ‘also reported that be had ordered a seal for the society in Boston a few weeks since, but it aad not yet ar- Fived. Dr. Mason then gave an account of his visit north and the workings of similar societies in northern cities. In Boston an agent was em- ployed to look after violations of the law throughout the State and a ot detectives was engay in bri; the violators to punish- ment. He also gave a iption of the rooms occupied by the society there, and stated that among the members were to be found many leading and intiuential citizens of Boston. He next s} oke of his interview with Mr. Bergh, the founder of the New York society, which was similar to that of Boston and managed with ability. At the conclusion of Dr. Mason's remarks sev- eral gentlemen were elected members of the society. Dr. Reyburn next addressed the meet- ing, expressing his desire for the success of the association. The president, Mr. Gatchell, fol- lowed, speaking of the universal desire to see it successtul, and Messrs. ©. W. Dennixon, A. E. Newton, A. M. Scott and R. A. A communication from Inspector fersyth. calling attention to the condition of several lots on the east front of square No. 44, as being in a condition prejudicial to the health of the neighborhood, was referred to the First Ward delegation.’ A communication from Dr. Fisher, Commissioner of the Second Ward, call- ing attention to the condition of lots on 13th street, west side, between V and W streets, as being in a condition to effect the health of the residents of that locality, was referred to the the Second Ward delegation. The chair pre- sented the code of the health ordinance of New York city as amended by the committee, suggested that the same, with various altera- tiors, be adopted by the board for their guid- ance. Stewart, a well known citi- zen, fell down at the corner of 7th and G streets ima Stand died before medical aid could be procured. Apoplexy is supposed to be the cause. Captain Stewart commanded com A, Maryland and District volunteers in the Mexican war, having raised the company by his own efforts. For some time he commanded the Maryland battalion in the Mexican war, be- ing senior Captain of that command. He served gallantly through the war and was in most of ihe large battles of that campaign. He was about sixty years of age. Dr. Potier, the Coroner, was called this morn- ing, and after learning the facts decided that death was the result of natural causes—probably apoplexy. ‘an inquest was unnecessary. Mr. Joseph Gawler, undertaker, at the request of Capt. James Kelly and other friends of the de- ceased, took charge of the body, and they at once telegraphed to the brother of deceased, Col. This case had already been examined by the school commissioners, and he was under the erontee that the commissioners’ action was final. Mr. Garden hoped that the court would not pass over this question without an investigation, stating that a petition of titty heads of families had been presented to the commissioners asking that Mr. Longley should not be reap inted, but no attention was paid to it. The charges were made and an investigation had, but the results were not at all satistactory to some, and it was charged that the committee had whitewashed Mr. Longley. If the people did not want him he sLould not be forced upon them. Mr. Shepherd said he was satisfied trom the Teports in the papers that Mr. Longley’s useful- ness as a teacher in that section was destroyed, but he did not think that the court should take any action. for it would open the door to a large amount of such business, and the court in his — should not sit to hear appeals from that ard. Gilbert C.
