EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY....-. seen August 36, 1870. Reading Matter on Every Page. ‘The veil is lifted from the European scene of operations to-day sufficiently to show something ot the recent movements on the board. The great body of the German army is undoubtedly moving on Paris, and @ considerable force ia within three days’ march of the city, while Scouting parties have approached yet nearer. Without aceepting exaggerated estimates it may be set down as probable that the army now so pearly within striking distance of the de- voted city numbers not less than 490,000 men, and that as Metz, Strasburg, and the other French fortresses now occupying the atteation of large bodies of the Germans capitulate, the immense force before Paris will be largely increased, unless, indeed, as will most likely be the case, Paris is captured first. From Paris, to-day, we bave in turn accents Of hope and of despondency. All seems to be doubt and uncertainty there. At one time, ra- ‘Mors of French successes and of hopeful combi- Bations and movements effected by Bazaine and ‘McBlabon put the Parisians in a fool’s paradise of elation. Again, the news of the steady ad- vance of the Prussians in overwhelming num- bers, and misgivings as to the ability of McMahon and Basaine to extricate themselves from the toils, throws them into the depths of despondency. With the evidences of disin- tegration and confusion of counsel on the part of the French, there seems little to be hoped of their ability to make any successful headway against the colossal enemy. Waris to-day, it seems, puts all its hopes on McMahon, but it would appear that McMahon himself is quite likely to be cut off from that city by the enterprising Prussians. We havea Teport of a battle yesterday at Steny, ten miles from Montimedy, with another victory for the Prassians. ‘The fighting bere would seem to have been with a portion of McMahon's com- mand and the result does not look auspicious of his ability to save Paris from the German deluge impending. item The noble race of Clapp have been holding a family reunion at Northampton, Massachusetts, and itis stated that fally seven hundred of the kith and kin were gathered from all parts of the country. Theodore Clapp, of Easthampton, eailed the meeting to order; W. D. Mesabgd ed of Ne » made & speech of welcome, and introduced the president of the day, A. M. Clapp, of Washington, (Congressional printer,) who spoke briefly and was londly Clapped. Dr. Alexander H. Clapp, of New York, delivered a historical address, ‘tracing the race of Clapps back to Kiehard, Earl of Hampton, ani in this country to five Clapps, who, religiously perse- cuted, came overin 1630,-and settled at Dor- chester. Then followed, arenumeration, ofa tong line of notable Clapps, including Preserve Clapp. of Northampton; the renowned divines, Kev. Nathaniel Clapp, of Newport, K. L., and Kev. Theodore Clapp, of New Orleans; the well-known educators, Noah, Supply, Elisha, and Nathaniel Clapp; and such business men as Congressman A. W. H. Clapp and his father, Asa Clapp, the Portland (Me.) millionaire, who, according to Major Jack Downing, was so zeal- ous a Jacl man that when Old Hickory was expected'at Portland he provided a silver cham- ber utensil for his guest, in place of the crock- try article usually considered good enough. After more speech-making the seven handred Clapps went to dinner, and the interesting cele- bration was closed by singing “Auld Lang Syne.” The meeting was a solid, harmonious afair, without Clap-trap or ©! perclawing. —————-<02 Three months ago the name of Napoleon was the leading one in Europe. The markets of the world were effected by his frown or smile, or by the condition of his health from day to day. ‘The fact that he gave a Pleasant word to this a@mbassador, or a cool one to that, was tele- graphed to the ends of the world. Did his liver SLow signs of sluggishness down went the finan- e'al barometer at Paris, at Liverpool, at New York, at every market on the face of the globe. He maybe at Kheims, at Soiscons, at Mont- medy. nobody knows, nobody cares. Like Car- ginal Wolsey, he has now full opportunity to wultivate bitter reflections upon the vanity of bumagi grestness. In the case of “ the nephew of his uncle,” his- tory repeats itself. They assert that their routes do not pay at less than 5 cents per head. The charters of some of the companies permit them to rega- late their own prices. Those affected are the companies whose charters fixes the fare at 5 cents, but who, by act of Congress, were per- amitied to charge 6 cents to cover the govern- Ment tax Om gross receipt. ‘The extra cent a good deal More than covered the tax; but that law was repealed last seasion, andthe companies Bow come back upon the bard pan of their char- ter requirements. eo —__ The New York Commercial says that » gentle- man while reading an essay on “Bessemer Beat” before the Scientific Convention at Troy ‘Tuesday “collapsed and fell to the floor tn au insensibie condition.” Glad to hear it!
