Cable to-day give reports (anofii- cal) Of a heavy battle yesterfiay northwest of Metz, in which the Imperial Guard, it is stated, drove « ast body of Prussiane back upon the | Moselle.” An official dispatch (French) also claims a victory, but does not give particulars. | top oybeenlgthess, Samo meet that the fighting was near Briey, notthwest of | Metz, which pot was held by the French. In @ subsequent dispatch it is stated that Briey is in possession of the Prnssians. The solutien of the enigma presented in the contradictory dis- patches is that the French, ander Bazaine, have for some days been endeavoring to effect a retreat from Metz to Verdun, and the Prussians have fought persistently to prevent Bazaine trom falling back to Verdun and the line of the Meuse. In the obstinate battle of Tuesday it appears that the Prussians intercepted a des perate attempt to retreat, and forced Ba- zaine to seek the shelter of the fortress of Metz. T fighting yesterday would seem to be t the same end; Bazaine seck- ing to efect a retreat and a janction with Gen. Trochu on the Meuse, and the Prussiang secking to wedge themselves between the French armies. This is arisky movement on the part of both the French and the Prussians, and a little good generaiship on either side would setve to make the adversary se@er. But thus far the French, at least, do not seem to be able to profit by any mistaxes of their ad- ¥enturous opponents. In yesterday's fighting they may perhaps have succeeded in shaking theur persistent assailantgof their line ofretreat, but this is by no means settled by the dispatches received. . ene The adjourned Democratic Staté Convention of Maine met in Banger Tuesday. General Charles W. Kobetts, of Bangor, was nOminated candidate for Governor, having received all but two votes in the convention. General Koberts fought against the rebels in the early part of the war, as colonel of the Second Maine regiment, from whieh he was afterwards pro- moted ta brigadier general. He was an admirer of General McClelian, and left the army about the time MeCleilanwas superseded. Since that time he has actéd with the Democratic party. He is personally popular, and had he @ weaker opponent than Sidney Perham, would make a good run, but as it is the nomination ts merely @ complimentary one, and it is little wonder that Franklin Smith, the Demeeratic candidate of last year, declined to be put up fer slaughter. ‘The convention threwa tub to the Crispins, who are pretty strong In Maine, by going dead against Jobn Chinaman, and also meerted an anti-Maine liquor law plank in‘their platform, but party dodges of this sort are so transparent that they affect few votes. \PINATIONS POR CowGRESss.—Hon. Thomas M Neely bas been nominated for re-election to by the democrats of the ninth Illinois MeNeely was elected to the 4ist Con- Gemocrat, receiving 17.577 votes * for Ross, republican. ‘ At the congressional convention held at Cam- bridge, Gurnsey county, Ohio, in the sixteenth 0 district, yesterday, Hon. John K. Bingham was renominated for Congress on the third bal- lot. Mr. Bingham was elected to the 34th. 35th, ‘S6th, th, Ith, and 40th Congresses and was re-elected to the 40th Congress by 15,157 votes, against 15,}41 for his opponent, Estrep, demo- erat. ‘The republicans of the first congressional dis trict of South Carolina have put in nomination State Senator Eainey (colored) to fill Mr. Whit- temore’s unexpired term in the 4Ist, and also for the full term in the 42d Congress. Whitte- more’s candidate got only 9 out of 39 yotes on the informal ballot. Rainey makes the secon coloréd candidate for Congress in that state. Much complaint is made by housekeepers at the short weight of ice furnished by those en- gaged in serving that very necessary article. We have no idea that this abuse is sanctioned by or known to the management of either company, and merely allude to the fact now in order that they may know it exists and be able to apply the necessary remedy, promptly and effectively. High prices are bad enough, but when short weight ts coupled with them the case becomes decidedly irritating. sees: Yesterday the democratic convention of Geor- gia adopted resolutions inviting colored voters to support that party, denouncing the republi- cans, and promising to do all in their power to Secure a fair election. ste]e- ‘The New York papers groan loudly under the ice monopoly that has sent the price up to two cents a pound.
