\. wee TAL D COMMERCIAL, The indecisive character of the war news has the effect to deaden the activit yin comercial and financial circles, both in New York and ip London. In Wall street dullness was the Principal feature of the markets to the close of yesterday. The late fighting has, at least, not resulted in such disastrous reverses to the French arms as they met at Weissenburg and Forbach. Dispatches to the New York Tel- <gram, given elsewhere, tell of terrible reverses to the French in the late Sighting and a demor- alized retreat towards Chalons, bat they are so vague and sensational in character as to be ap- parently little more than guess work. The situation seems to be about this. The two armies (French and Prussian) are on the two roads to Paris. Napoleon is falling back by the ordinary mail road from Metz to Chalons by way of Verdun, and the Prussians are pro- ceeding along the line of the railroad from Nancy to Chalons by way of Toul, Commercy, Bar-le-Duc, and Vitny. It is not improbable that a portion of the Prussian army may be fol- lowing Napoleon over the mail road to Chalons via Verdun. This isa macadamized road and is practicable for heavy gans. The French still bold Metz with Sstrong garrison; and Stras. burg, also, as wil! be seen from the fact that the garrison of the latter was able to make a vigor- ous eortie. ‘The opinion is expressed by the London Times to-day that the fighting st Metz was disastrous to the French, and that another reverse to them | netuations. Late in the day the decline In | © advance, while the government bonds re- d stationary, and were not affected either way by the news or the fluctuations in gold. ‘The money market was more active and the business on call was at4to 6 per cent. This hardening tendency in the rates of interest is doce, in some measure, to # sympathy with the condition of monetary affairs in other cities and 8 fear that the banks — callin —< loans in con-equence of a drain of currency. In Boston money is in ‘demand, whilein Philadelphia good it is reported stringent by private telegrams, and at New Orleans @ positive pressure exists. eee | Oa aph, Sis; oa rot at Chalons will make proper an offer of media~ Chien & Altus prea ite tion by England. It is also believed in London yt fs Certificates, 33’,, Tennessee that the French troops went into action in a starving condition in the late fighting. This seems scarcely credible in view of the fact that ‘Metz is on two lines of railroad communicating with Paris, besides the mail road via Verdan, and there would seem to be no reason why the Lemons, Aug. 17 supplies should not be abundant for the use of Cotton anche bo =a =—s eto aged. it firmer: for choice $1.42, ‘are dull wag 42, ai 50a§ 1.60. good to the army, unless through some terrible blander- prime reds @ ‘G1 begs. 91.2): whits, = oe tak ‘ eilow,, ing and inefficiency in the commissary depart- peasy ae wits our corn sen guaSt Fm oe ment. 75a 3."
