The late fighting has, at least, not resulted in such disastrous reverses to the French arms as they met at Weissenburg and Forbach. Dispatches to the New York Tel- <gram, given elsewhere, tell of terrible reverses to the French in the late Sighting and a demor- alized retreat towards Chalons, bat they are so vague and sensational in character as to be ap- parently little more than guess work. The situation seems to be about this. The two armies (French and Prussian) are on the two roads to Paris. Napoleon is falling back by the ordinary mail road from Metz to Chalons by way of Verdun, and the Prussians are pro- ceeding along the line of the railroad from Nancy to Chalons by way of Toul, Commercy, Bar-le-Duc, and Vitny. It is not improbable that a portion of the Prussian army may be fol- lowing Napoleon over the mail road to Chalons via Verdun. This isa macadamized road and is practicable for heavy gans. The French still bold Metz with Sstrong garrison; and Stras. burg, also, as wil! be seen from the fact that the garrison of the latter was able to make a vigor- ous eortie. ‘The opinion is expressed by the London Times to-day that the fighting st Metz was disastrous to the French, and that another reverse to them | netuations.
