A Trip to Cobb’s Island—Excursion of the Lady of the Lake “A Sniff of tho Briny”— Fatbing, Fishing, Shooting, &c. _ EVENING STAR, Washington News and Gossip. Lievr. ComMaNpER Cates McGReeor OBTTING OFF. has been detached from the Naval Obwervazory | aye piessure exearsion to Cobb's Island, im this city and ordered to the Naval Academy. a = planned and carried oat last week by the pro- ws Prietors of the fine steamer Lady of.the Lake, Proved to be what everybody expected—a com- Plete success in every particular. On Friday morning, promptly at the hour named in the advertisement, a cogpspiny of nearly two hun- dred pereons arsembled at the steamer’s wharf, anxious to escape even for aliitle time the heat, ¢ares, and labors of the city. The assemblage, which was preity everly divided between the two sexes,—the “stags” being unhappily some- what in the pscendant,—inciuded within its numbers a far represeniation of the beauty and brilliancy of Washington society, with a goodly seasoning from the learned professions, the press, the atmy and navy, the diplomatic corps, and the mercantile, industrial, and gen- eral business inter:sts of the city,—all equipped and provided accordingty as their taste or re- quirements dictated. The face of every one gave promise of a determination to have a good time, if such a thing wes to be had, either upon the land or navigable waters of the United States, or upon the dominions of old Neptune himself. And they had it, too. But that is farther along. , Unfortunately, owing to a m’sealculation as to the length of i:me necessary to put the vessel in proper trim for ber trip, she was not as prompt in getting under way as was desirable, and aconsiderable amount of grambling was indalged in by the impatient ones of the party. But those more philosophical in their make up took the delay good naturedly, and turned it to ‘account by cracking jokes at their iras- cible companions, and by occasionally “ cutting a watermelon.” (Mem:—This latter exercise ap- —e be indulged in, not in the vicinity of huge pile of the fruit lying near by, as one might naturally suppose, but im a building a little distance away, with the word * saloon,” Or something like that, over the door; and the efter sport consisted, not in shooting the slip- Pery seeds in each other's faces, but in bouncing queer shaped corks, much like those taken from champagne bottles, off every bald bead ‘that Maror Emeny left this ciiy last evening for New York andother northern cities t> join Gen. For a while there seemed to be the usual tendency on the part of a good many to play wall flower in little sets of twos and fours and balf-dozens, but this feeling of stiffaess and re- ferve soon wore away, and presently every- thing was as lovely as any one could wish, with the famous barometrical goose hanging high over all. Cards, music, story and song wiled away the time until Piney Point was reached, about 9 @’clock in the evening. Of course, a landing wes made here, but only long enongh to enable those wishing to go ashore to do so, and to afford those on the boat and friends on the pier anopportunity to exchange greetings. For a few minutes the air was filled with “ What's the news?” “ How are you, Bob’ * Why, how @ye do, Jenny?” ** How long have you beea Bere?” “When’ll you be back, Frank?” “Good-bye, John!” ete. After those wishing to test ihe attractions of ‘this pleasant spot had gone ashore, and those Wishing to join the expedition had done s0, away “he good boat sped in the dim twilight, her bow cleaving the sipplibg waters like an ai row the blue air. “Five o'clock in the morning” gave those whose guilty consciences had murdered sleep ‘a fine opportunity to view the ‘mpregnable for- tifications of Fortress Morvoe, with the slowly- growing walls on the Kip-Raps beyond, and a little while after the sw.ti-revol\:ng wheeis eame to a stand-still in the splendid he-bor of Norfolk. At this point quite an addi.ion wes made to the crowd of pleasarc -seekers on board; $n outside pilot wes teken on, and the steamer ‘was headed direct for the final point of destina- tion, which was reached by eleven o'clock, with- out any incident of general interest. Jvst before passing the capes the party was treated t> an unexpected, and, to many, an un- welcome luxvry, in the form of a thunder- storm atsea. The lowering clouds, the vivid lightning, and the seethitg waves, with Heaven’s artillery crashing loud above the noise of the machinery and the roar of the winds, combined to present a spectacle magnificently grand and awc-ipspiring in the extreme; but its beauties were lost on full half those on board, who were placed hers du ccmbat by the heavier sea accom- panying the squall. Byron's famous lines on the battle of Waterloo, though weilien tor a widely different ocer<ion, described the scene faithtelly:— s+ There was hurrying to and fro, And gathering tears, and tcemblings of distress, And cheeks all pi jieh bat an hoar ago® Blushed at the praise of their ow a loveliness; Ani there were sudden partings!”* The fixed teatrrss of dignitied men relaxed quickly; the magriticence of pompous dowagers gave way at once toa mest forlorn and wretched expression of !impness and goneness, sentimen- tal perties and billing and cooing lovers who had sauntered along the sea shore the evening Ddefore asking each other ‘‘what are the wild waves saying?’ found that they said “Give! THE WAR. Last NIGHT'S TELEGRAMS. SERIOUS DISTERBANCES IN PARIS. Particulars of the Rattles mear Mets. Lest night's telegrams contain very few par- ticulars of the battles near Metz on Sunday and yesterday im addition to those given in the cable disyatches in last evening’s Star. Below we print the most important of thove received here after we went to prees, including one containing ‘an account of a serious riot in Paris. EXCITING DISORDEKS IN PARIS. Paris, Ang. 15.—The Journal Oficiet reports the arrest of a party on the highway, in whose house wrs found @ quantity of poignards and revolvers of a large calibre, and ammunition. He was followed the night betore last t> an isolated house in the neighborhood of the forti- fications, where were found a list of names, a number of red flags, different rallying Signals, a description of the troops occupying the forts svrrounding the capital, and a carte de visite of & persop in the service of the sovereign now at war wih France. (n the afternoonor amar day, about 4 o'clock, a band of from sixty to ity men, all armed with revolvers and ards, of exactly the same model of those previously seized, attacked an engine-house on the Bou'evard Villette, they assailed the guard with daggers and revolvers. One of the officers received a wound in the breast, and a fireman was very seriously wound- ed by three bullets. Four guns kept at the sta- tion were carried away. The policemen of the 10th arrondissement, who ran ft their aid, also received a volley; one fell instantly dead, an others were seriously wounded. Physiciat think that there is little hope of the recovery of two of them. A little girl was also killed by & stray ball froma revolver. The police, led by their Officers, under the orders of the commi rary of police, arrested im-nediately the ring- leader a) Nga gp pera The erry co-operated, and, tall of enthusiasm, of its own accord to make other ar.csts. The guns taken from the firemen have been retaken, and the weapons abandoned by the insurgents have also been seized. A call to arms baving been spontaneously made in the quartier, a goodly number of National Guard were got together, who, with the aid of citizens, contributed toward the rc- establishment of order. A squadron and a com- pany of the Guard of Paris, which immediately arrived, were hailed with acclamation. Ser- ad de Villeabo received the applause merited by their courage. The commi: of the agents of police bave made great efforts to protect from pul lic in lignstion the individuals under arrest. hey number about fifty in all. They were imprisoned in the depot of the prefecture. During the evening two persons were also taken whom a student pointed out on the Boulevard Saint Michael. They carried daggers identical with those seized on the Boulevard Villette. They offered resistance and refused to answer qnestions put to them. After fire o'clock the Fovlevard Villette resumed its usual quiet. ‘Crowds of 300 to 400 persons continue to search for rioters and manifest the highest indignation. At a quarter past six o'clock other parties made an attack on the sentries of the same station. ‘Two were arrested by the i locked up in the barracks. ‘he r.oters will be brought before a court-martial to-day. The Empress has sent a letter of condolence and aid to the parents of the girl that -vas killed. ADDITIONAL FROM METZ. Quite a detachment, who had lost their hreak- fast in their contest with old Neptune, and who feared they might also be called on to give up their dinner if they took it on the boat, con- ceived the idea of going ashore at Oid Point and getting a ‘good square meat” on terra firma once more,as they could spend nearly three hours onshore, which would enable them to get their dinner preity well anchored while the steamer ran down to Norfolk and back. But *hey went for wool and came back shorn. The hotel there wasn’t taking care of excursion par- ties so much as formerly; not any, in point of fact! The restaurants were closed. The street fruit-stands had their shutters up. The hot corn sellers were ont after supplies. The preprietors of the curbstone boarding houses were at churcwor gone a-crabbing. Noth- ing remained but to ring the door bells of private houses and solicit cold victuals! Bat even this forlorn hope failed the hungry pil- rime. Either the Old Pointers are not given 5 charity toward wandering bands, or else they saw that their larders couldn't meet the wants of such @ ravenous looking brigade. At any rate, when the steamer returned from Norfolk the gaunt and spectral throng crowding the pier were glad enough to get on board again; and it wasn’t long yntil negotiations were entered into between its authorized representatives and fhe good-natured steward of the vessel. Result : special dinner, and a rattling of dishes in the dining saloon, which lasted far into the night. FROM TWILIGHT UNTIL DAWN. Sunday evening was. appropriately spent in listening to some most excellent music, vocal and instrrmental, farpished by the amateurs of the party, among whom should be named Captain Denty and Messrs. J. B. Dawson and F. Heyer. After twelve o’clock some of the livelier spirit« on board, who seemed determined to drain the cup of pleasure to its very lees, got up a grand farewell dance on the lower deck. This was Kept up, it was understood, uniil nesr daylight, or at least until tired natare could hold out no longer. 4 HOME AGAIN. After leaving Old Point, landings were made at Point Lookout, Piney Point, and Alexandria, and within ten minutes of the time fixed for her arrival the good steamer reached her wharf, without accident or unpleasant incident. [t is not too much to say that all were delighted with their trip, and will be gisd to take it again whenever opportunity effers—as all hope it may offer again, at no distant day. It is only just to add, aleo, that much of the pleasure of the ex- cursion was due to the unremitting and polite personal efforts of Captain Denty, the careful and popular officer in charge, and of Messrs. Geo. H. Plant and Austin P. Brown, of the pro- taken to Gaeta. tedge him.
