I meetings of the peo; general take place, and if y swear to the fact that they will sacrifice life and property for their native country and enlist voluntarily in the ranks, it is ved to send an address to the King, commencing: “Most August, most Mighty and most Gracious.” It appears to us that the representatives of the Germans have as yet not su find another more dignitied mapper in which “to address their Chief, bat seem to look upon him as something extra’ The famous so1 of Arndt and Koerner were suffic- jent to ft. our forefathers with enthusiasm, but in none of them we find snch pitiful declar- ations of loyalty for the ruler. ‘No loyalty can create the enthusiasm which is undoubtedly Te fh such times. Reports have been received from him at | _®"5-3t_ the Navy Department showing the condition of the work up to July 2ist, and containing many points of terest in connection with the work. The Midway Islands being about half way across the Pacific ocean the government desires to es- tablish a coaling depot there for our vessels in that ecean. The contract for the work was given to Mr. Townsend, of Boston, one of the most experienced and skillfal men in the coun- try for that class of work, he having met with great success in removing obstructions trom Boston harbor and other points on our coast. A channel er canal of at least 175 feet must be cut at the islands, which is the least space that can be used with safety to vessels of much capacity. It is estimated that at least #175,000 will be required to execute the work and three or four years of industrious employment, hence the appropriation made at the last session will be of little use. Lieutenant Commander Sicard thinks the time, work and expense necessary to make this canal and improve the harbor have never been properly appreciated, and that it is & first-class undertaking to get it through in a creditable manner. The difficulties of working and removing the coral rock could not be seen or estimated beforehand, and it is his opinion that after the barbor can be entered it will not be a very favorable one for large ships. “Springs” De necessary to cant a steamer's head right for going out or to turn her sround, particularly a side wheel vessel. -2ee- — S7- Newark is dismissing policemen just for cowartice. of the jastly BALLARDVALE FLANNELS, at the lowest prices ever offered, One Price On'y.
