The telegrams to-day announce a severe bat- tle near Metz, anc both sides claim the victors. Napoleon. however, admits a complete surprise, And until something more «lefinite is re take a great am mnt Of stock init. This is the third time the French have been surprised by the Prus: and ‘h time previously the Surprise resulted in a disastrous reverse to the former. (n this occasion the French were at- tacked while half across the Moselle apparently on the retreat to Chalons, and it the Prussian’ failed to ro T opponents while assailing them in this disadvantageous and crippled po sition they were much less enterprising and had much worse fortane than heret tore. Itw ppear that the Prussians, advancing through the Vosges mountains, reached tue town of Nancy, a point on the railroad between Strasburg and Paris and Metz and Paris, (Metz being at the end of a branch road,) vir. tually intercepting Napoleon's most direct rail communication with Paris. This was a move- ment that Napoleon had every reason to expect en the part of the Prussians, yet, from appear- ances, he seems to have remained at Metz until the Prussians were actually in bis rear. At the last moment he undertakes to retreat across the Moselle, probably with the design of falling back upon Chalons, there to make a stand for the defence of Paris; and while astraddie of the river with bis army, one half on one side and half on the other, he is pounced pon by the ent:rprising Prussians, who spring ip, as it were, out of the ground, atter the style f the late Stonewali Jackson. It does not eem clear, from the telegrams, exactly where the late fighting took place. It would appear that Napoleon, on leaving Metz, headed towards Verdun, which is on the. route (not the railroad route) to Chalons, and is a strongly fortified point itself. His bulletin to Eugenie is dated at Longeville. There are several French villages of that name, but it would scem probable that the point named. is Longeville on the line of railroad between Strasburg and Paris and Metz and Paris. A day or two ago it was announced that Prus- sian cavalry bad appeared at Luneville, Frouard and Pont-a-Mous-on, and though this © nideant of the Prussian advance in that direction it appears that Napoieonset it down as nothing more than the movements of raiding parties upon the line of railroad. Frouard is a small village on the Moselle at the confluence of the Meurthe. Here the rail- road to Strasburg from Paris branches off to Metz. A few miles southeast of Frouard ts the fortre: of Toul, which commands the route to Paris. It has been supposed that a portion of the Freuch forecs were stationed at Toul, and it is not improbable that McMabon may have fallen back to that point. Laten.—The later telegrams from London report another heavy battle near Metz to-day, resulting in @ victory to the Prussians. The probabiltties are all in this direction: indeed it would seem that nothing short of a miracle could enable Napoleon to extricate himself Trom his net-work of ditficulties and achieve a success. Meanwnile the European situation is compli- cated by the Kepublican uprisings noted in ¥sriou- quarters. Telegrams to-day announce cotemporaneous Republican demorstrations in Italy and im Spain, and in various parts of France; and it is intimated that they are or formidable dimensions. We do not see, however, that the progress of the Prussian arms would be impeded should the counti.es named all proclaim a Republic. With such great military successes to sustain him, King William has little to fear from revolution at home, and revolution elsewhere will rather cripple his enemic+ than damage him. +202. G., F Railread a and Absorp- ‘The work of commana and consolidation nmongst the great railroad powers continucs to go on, and it would not be strange at the present rate of progress if the entire railroad system of the country got presently into the hands of balfa dozen men. The latest “consolidation” is that of the Erie railroad and the New York Central, dim Fisk and Vanderbilt having buried the hatchet and agreed to merge their interests. A consolidation of all the interesis of these two Toads, with their extensive ramifications, will atteet the interests of nearly every railroad in the country. Another consolidation or absorption on a mam. Moth scale is proposed, being nothing lcss than the leasing of the railway and canal properties of the Joint Companies of New Jersey by the already gigantic Penosylvapia Railroad Con- pany. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company, it seems, want an outlet at New York for their traffic, the better to compete with the great lines centering at New York, which it cannot have, if it trades through Philadelphia, without connecting with the Camden and Amboy and Joint Companies, These New Jersey compa- nies bave not the facilities at Jersey City to accommodate the rapidly growing trade of the Pennsylvania railroad. The Joint Companies have purchased Harsimn’s Cove, at Jersey City, at a cost of about half a million of dollars, which, until improved, lies a dead weight on the companies’ hands. ‘This purchase was made mainly to accommo- date the trade of the Pennsylvania railroad; but who is to improve it, ag it must first be im- proved? The New Jersey companies are of opinion that, as all this additional great outlay is mainly to accommodate the Pennsylvania compasy, it should be at their expense, the more especially as, if it puts its money there, it will to that extent cement the joint interests, and naturally Hold them together, giving to the route all the through trattic of the Pennsylva- nia road, which otherwise, at some future day, might be tempted away. The Philadelphia Ledger says that the project of the lease has been discussed in an informa! way for some time between parties prominent on both sides, and that “ the alleged difference as to whether the price shall be ten or twelve per cent. per cent. per annnm ts perhaps not so wide as to be upadjustable.”” 4s arulé the consolidation business does not strike us favorably, the public, in nine cases out of ten. being the sufferers by it, but we must say we should not be sorry to see the Pennsyl- vapia Railroad Company have the handling of the roac’s between Philadelphia and New York for a while, as an experiment. Ifthatcompany can introduce upon these roads the admirable system of management by which they have made thelr Pénnsyivania roads famous all over the world, the public will hava every reason to rejoice in thechange. We certainty go for “‘ab- Sorption” in this case. ‘The Philadelphia Sunday Times says there is no disguising the fact that yellow fever is pre- vailing at the Lazaretto, ten wiles below that “aa ‘snd in constant communication with it by pce pen ‘nd points out the necessity for prom, action * phia pr ap by the Philadel from extending. The present weather, heavy tains followed by oppressive heats is peculiarly favorable to the dissemination of yellow fever and diseases of that class, and it will be well for our own Board of Health to take due precautions to the end of putting the city in a condition not to invite disease. ss0e- ‘The Louisiana Republicans have just had a fovr-days’ convention.
