EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District CROSBY 5S. NOYES.......Editer, WASHINGTON OITY: SATURDAY. August 13, 1870. _ Reading Matter on Every Page, ‘That “imminent battle” In Europe still im- Ponds. Our latest telegrams report all quiet on fie Khine. ————--+ee- Tae Bactimore axp Potomac Raitmoap — It is satisfactory to note from time fo time the progress of the work on the Baltimore and Po- tomac Railroad, showing that Governor Bowie and the managers of the road mean to carry out their promise that the iron horse shall be run- ning over it by the first of April next. ‘The grading has now been finished on the main line of the road from the Patapsco to be- low Marlboro’, with the exception of one sec- tion, which will be completed next week. Ties are being delivered along the Mue, and it is pro- bable that a considerable portion of the rail will be laid this fail; and if the work within this District and in Ealtimore county is pushed with the same activity, there is no good reason why the cars should not be ruuning even earlier than April. ‘This rond will strike the Patapsco about seven miles below Elkridge Landing, and take nearly B straight course to the Little Patuxent, at about the mouth of Kogue Harbor Branch, cross ing the Annapolis and Elk Ridge Kailroad near Watt's. The crossing of the Big Patuxent will be made about 8 quarter of a mile below Lemon’s Bridge, from whence the track will take almost & straight line io Hantingdon, the point of janc- tion with the Washington ranch. The main Wine thence follows down Collington Branch, crossing the West Branch of the Paisxentnes- its mouth, andso on to the Marlboro’ Depot, on the lands ot Clement Hill. About seven m'les bolow Marlboro’ the road strikes the table land, over which there is com- paratively little work to be done, the naturai grade being very nearly the grade of the road. ‘The road thence passes about midway between Brandywine and T. B., and enters Chailes county. In this county two routes have been surveyed, one having its terminus opposite Aquia Creek, and the otner about the mouth of Pope’s Creek. (One of these routes will be set- tled upon next week. as the contractors, who bave finished their work above, are desirous of putting in for this job. The grading upon the Baltimore and Poto- mac road is not heavy, but a corside:able num- ber of culverts will be required, and several bridges, the most important of which will be those over the Great and Little Pataxent, 200 feet and 156 in length. — Elsewhere will be found some communieations Teceived within a day or two, complaining that despite the Mayor's proclamation, the vagrant hogs, geese, and goats continue to stray at large enjoying the fullest liberty of the city. The notice given by the Mayor was as follows: Mayor's Orrico, Crty Hatt, WASHINGTON, August 4, 1570. Notice is — to the owners of geese, and goats that on and after the sth instant the laws against allow.ng these animais to run at large within the (conpesation will be strictly enforced. M. G. Emzey, Mayor. ‘This it will be seen is positive—peremptory— to the point. Now, why Is it not enforced? What has + Major Richards to = about: it? — ‘The Baltimore Sun and the Baltimore Gazette in using our account of the execution of Hichards at Marlboro yesterday, courteously give Tue Stam credit, but the Amzrican in copying the same fails to do so, and says “a detter from Upper Marlboro supplies the follow- ing details,” &c. Considering that we were at the trouble and expense of running an express Sighteen miles with our special report after 12); P-m., thereby presenting to our readers a tw. coluran account of the execution at 4p. m., we submit that this is hardly the fair thing in the American.
