By ovr cable telegrams it would seem that the Prussians have achieved a suceess which they may be even justitied in claiming as a “brilliant victory,” though, after the great con- Hicts of our late civil war, affairs ef the kind of Ssarbruck and Welssenburg, where the killed are reckoned only by scores and the captures by hundreds, hardly strike us as deserving the Dame of great battles. Weissenburg.the point captured by the Prus- sians, is fear the Bavarian line. At Wetsen- burg the French trontier descends from tha mountains into the beautiful and fertile ,val- ley of Alscace, following the river Lauter to the Khine, which France enjoys for her eastern boundary from the Lauter- berg to Basle. The “ Weissenburg Line” was built under the direction of Marshal Villars during the war of the Spanish aecession, and consisted of a chain of light works running from the left bank of the Rhine | along the Lauter, nearly fifteen miles, Weissen- burg itself being surrounded with walls and tow- €ts, While above it stood the majestic tire-bas- | tioned “Burgfastung.” This whole line was abandoned in 1867 by Imperial decree, thoagh the works were not razed. ‘This movement of the Prussians upon French territory would seem to indicate that Moltke bas entered upon the offensive, and a telegram elsewhere suggests that the point of attack first aimed at will be the town of Nancy, which is thirty miles sonth of Metz, on the left bank of the Meurthe, and on the railway from Paris to Strasburg. Should the Prussians head in this direction it would leok like an ‘On to Paris” movement in earnest. ‘Tre NatThaxs Murper.—The New York papers are still theorizing upon this mysterious murder, but no new facts calculated to give a clue to the murderer have been developed. It t= this: Was the murderer an mmate of the house or an outsider’ If the latter, he must bave been secreted in the buildiug previous to one o'clock on Friday morning; for at that time, or thereabouts, Mr. Washington Nathan says he came home, and locked, bolted, and chained the front door bebind him, so that no- body could bave come in without having left marks ot forcing bis way, while all the doors in the rear of the house were the following morn- ing found te have been undisturbed. -<ee- ‘Tue WEEKLY STAR for this week contains a full budget of late and interesting European War news, accounts of the battles at Saafbrack and Weissenberg, and graphic de the opening scenes of the great shock of arms.
