Tal EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District .-Editor. CROSBY 8S. NOYES. WASHINGTON cITy: MONDAY aneent 1, 1s70. "Reading Matter on Every Page, "gx Punsome leaving the city for Gewmner ean have Tae Stag mailed to their address by ordering the same at the office. Terms 5 cents per month. a = Governor Holden, of North Carolina, gee Very little support from the press, Republican or herwise. in his bigh handed course, but here ind there a paper is found inclined to defend him on the ground that strong measures are | Reeded for the suppression of Ka Klux Kian | @utrages. We are inclined to believe, on the con- trary that if Gov. H. were & secret emissary of | Ku Kiux Kiapism be could not more effectuany | Berve it than by his despotic acts in defiance of the law and of the sacred writ of habeas corpus. Secret societies of the desperate and san- guinary character of the Ku Kiux, the Car- Donari, &c., have their growth under ru! Of the Holden type. The designing leaders of Such societics need just such material to inflame the minds of men, and induce them to take their | desperate oaths, as the acts of Holden in defying the civi! courts, suspending and tearing up writs of habeas corpus, breaking Up peacefi meetings by military force, arresting the spzak- | ers, bayoneting the spectators, and selzing the Yeading citizens of whole counties, and trying | them by drum head court as hostages for the |: Jess ones. It was under a Holden style of gov. | ernment that the carbonari of Italy originated, and increased so rapidly that in one month in 1-2), as many as 650.600 new members were initiated. Under constitutional liberty in Italy, the society has now dwindled to insignificance, of it exists at all. It was under the rule of restored Bourbon. «em that’ French carbonarism spread with such rapidity, and assamed such formdable Proportions; and it has risen or dwindled down in that country precisely in proportion to the Oppressivencss or mildness of the government. in a tree country like ours there is no shadow of excuse for the formation of secret socisties of this lawless, desperate character; and they can never get a foot hold on our soil or receive any countenance from people of the slightest con- sideration except temporarily, under the stima- Jus of such blun Jering tyranny as that practised by Helden. ~ +se0e- _ ‘The citizens of Washington at large, and es- Peeially our municipal authorities, cannot tail to be deeply interested in a new reflecting street lamp which has recently been placed for in- Speetion at the southwest corner of 4; and D streets, opposite the City Hall. The lamp in question is the invention of Messrs. Grim & Moore, of San Francisco, and was patented on the Sth of April last, since which time it has been largely introdaced in the States of Cali- forma and Nevada, where it is particularly ac- ceptable, asthe retiectors can as well be applied to oil-burning lamps as to those consuming gx. We have not space to-day for a description of th. new invention, even if we were able to sat- istactorily describe its peculiarities; but as our readers are more interested in what it accom- Plishes than what it looks like, we give the re- sult of an experiment recently made in San Francisco, as recorded br the Alta, the leading Paper of that city. That journal says: rhe experiments Wednesday night with the wew lamp were a perfect success. [t was mounted ona ladder beat & city lamp-post of the common style, and furnished with gas from it. On the corner above and below, the city lights were burning as usual. At a distance of eighty fect from. the light ordinarily im use it was barely possible to distinguish time on a white faced watch. By the hght of the new Jamp the finest print might easily be read at a distance of 150 tect. At that distance going to- advance. During the trial of the lamp the gas used was only about two-thirds the amount ordinarily burned in street lamps. It is claimed for the invention that with one-third less gas than is | § sve @ clear andsteady | burned at present it light for a distance of 220 feet on each side upon the sidewalk, and 150 feet each ‘ight ronn the street. At present there are ten lights required for every two of our largest biecks: whereas were the jamp of Messrs. Grim & Moore intro- duced, but five or six would =o , with eg Saving, in addition, of 33:; pér cent. ‘of Fs new lamp might also be”: made nse 0! arge public buildings, two or three lights oa ae ring the same purpoee as a dozen ordinary burners. ‘The results of an experiment here on Satar_ Gay evening were not less satisfactory. The Jamp im question, using only a three-foot barn- er, was fund to i!Inminate a mach larger space, and much more effectually too, than allthree of | ihe lamps directly opposite, and in front of the west wing, which have six-fect burners each. | In addition to this, the light Is much whiter, softer. purer, and steadier than that secured from an ordinary lamp. It will be on exhibition Bgain this evening, when one of the inventors | Will probably be there to give any information that may be desired in regard to it. Thoseeof our citizens who are interested im incresspd Kglt acd reduced gas b.lls—and that means pretty much every body—should examine the ion und Satisfy themselves as to its +200. = A good dealof a hnbbub kas been created among the clerks and other employes of t Kepubiican Executive Committee, po ing a tax of ©; eleetion purposes. Having s- the knowie: thats custom akia to this has Obtained with both policieal parties for véars, we suppose the gentlemen thus called on have | no right to complain; but the assessment mever- theless comes pretty hard in a good many cases, perticularly when it is Temombered that the mest of the clerks are required ta contribate | for local political purposes at their respective homes, and some of them we believe were also bled in the interest of the Bowen dynasty just before our late municipal election. But poople | who inhale the odor of political rosebeds must expect to be pricked by the thorms occasion- ally —_—_—__-~ee-— — ‘The democrats of the 1th Vbio district reminated Lyman RB.
