In this case the victim was Benja. min Nathan, a wealthy and prominent citizen of New York. The Express says : The family of Mr. Nathan are at present in the country, and himselt and his two sons, with & domestic or two, occupied the house. On Thursday night, between 11 and 12 o’cleck, one of the sons got home, and after consultation with bts father, they both retired torest. The fatter slept ima rear bed-room, which a dress- room adjoined. The second son got home before half-past twelve o'clock, and while pass- ing to his room looked tu upon his father, and saw that he was asleep. This morning, soon after six o'clock, one of the sons arose, and, as usual, afterdressing him self proceeded to his father’s bed room, and was Pe to tind the bed unoccupied. He turned te enter the dresting room, and was hor- ruied to find his body lying in the doorway be- tween the two rooms, bis head surrounded by a pool of blood whieh had tfowed from a frightful Wound on the left side of it. An alarm was im- mediately given and medieal aid procured, but too late to be of assistance, tor he had evidently been dead some time. Near the body was found an instrament ship-carpenter’s *‘dog,”’ a sort of se, With a hammer on one end and a nt at the other, with which the fatal been given. The skull on the left si is completely smashed in and the ear is nea: t in two. ‘There was a safe in the sieeping room, which had been opened, and tie papers st contained were seattered about the floor, the sons doubt, however, if the villain or villains obtained any money. ‘The gold watch and chain of the deceased, and some diamond stud are missing, and such money as may have been in the pockets of his clothes. As the house was not broken into, it is sup- posed thai the murderer must have secreted himself inthe house at an early hour of the evening. The deceased was doubtless awakened by the operation of opening the safe, and as he was entering the ‘Jressing-room he received his death blow, and death must have been instan- taneous. No clue to the perpetrator, or perpe- tralors, has yet been obtained, but Saperinten- dent Jourdan and hie detectives are actively ay possibly succeed in arresting . Nathan was 56 years of age, and 2 braker. doing business at No. 4S Broad street. He was of the Jewish persuasion, and yuite wealthy. He was a prominent member of the congregation hearith Israel. In a late edition of the Express it is hinted that there are suspicions that the deed was com- mitted by some member of the family of th: deceared. The C: mmercial says:—Mr. Nathan, whose un- Umely fate has excited the deepest commiser- ation among all classes of the community—es- pecially among the habitues of Wall street, where he spent forty years of his life—was born in the city of New York, in the year 1813. His tather was an American. His mother was, be- fore her marriage, Miss Henriques, a member of one of the old Knickerbocker families, and a leading belle in her day. Young Nathan was educated under * the direct supervision of his father and was a most accomplished class- ical scholar. When but twenty-two yearsof age he was taken into partnership by his father, and such was his tinancial ability and business tact that in a short time the capital of the tirm was almost doubled by his fortunate investments. He retired from active business about two years ago, with @ fortune of some $2,000,000, leaving two sons as his successors. All garments worn next the skin during the fay should be removed at night and spread out jor thorough airing and drying. Cotton is the best material to be worn next the skin at night. All changes from a hearier to a lighter clothing in summer should be made by putting on the lighter clothing at the first dressing in the morning. It is greatly safer for children, for invalids, and old persons to have too much clothing than too little.—Hall’s Journal of Health. see - A NEW LAW for the regulation of the “social evil’ in St. Louis, is said already to have ex- hibited decidedly beneticial effects, in imposing restraints upon the evil which called it into being amidst the faithlessness and serious oppo sitions of ‘a large and indyential portion of the community. The number of disreputable females has already been materially diminished, while the nuisance in respectable neighbor !oo. is being rapidly abated. The Protestant clergy for the most part denounced the law as # Violation of the divine principle of making no compromise with sin; overlooking the equally divine maxim that it is both wise and expedient to control and ameliorate an e be radically cured. A pliflant priest, on the other hand, has been conspicuous ly active in obtaining the passage of the law in juestion and in furthering its objects. A large Body of the most moral and enlightencd citizens are in full sympathy with the movement. thet the experiment, whtch is of vital impor- tance te the whole community, is like to have air trial. Meanwhile the subjects of the rigid surveillance which has been established are diminishing, hundreds having lett the city or abandoned their ovions trattic. The resalis may be that what was designed only for a regulation of vice will prove to be the most effectaal mode ot suppression. in Tak Fenian Leapens, General O'Neill and Colonel John N.
