DErRo, Esu —We regret to the death of Mr. Fred. Depro, who } years was known to our citizens as a 1 special agent of the Post fice Department. His disease was consumption; age. forty years. His death will be mourned by a jarge cirele of friends. He was a ¢ Birth, but came here when only eig! age. In the ear'y part of the war he was ap- pomted a detective under the War Department, and served until 1885, when he accepted & position as special agent of the Post Office Department, aud operated in this section of country. He was removed from office about » year since, but when the value of his past ser- vices were known by the Department he was reappointed. and sent to Tennessee, and made Nashville his headquarters. John M. & J.G. May, at the ortheast corner of “Sd and K streets, at the Circle. The building and contents were totall destroyed, with @ loss of about $1,000, on whic there was an insurance of #300 in a Baltimore company. The fire department were quickly on the =pot—the Union arriving first, the Addison of Georgetown next, and then the Franklin. ‘They worked well, but it was impossible to do more than save the adjoining property. The tire was the work of an incendiary. 2 rain DESPERATE ASSAULT ON AN OLD MAN BY HicuwasyMen.—Kodgers Hudson, an old col- ered man, while on his way home at Buzzard's Point. on Saturday evening last. was attacked by three colored men, knocked down, and cut retty badly im the legs and breast with a razor. Located on the west side of New Jersey avenue, to the south of the Capitol, the wain offices are oceupving a couple of dilap tated dwellings with defective foundations at | the brink of Capitol Hill, which are shakin; id cracking under the influence of our semi-Sropi- cal gales. whilst the several divisions are located in miscellaneous dwellings of the adjoining squares, which were temporarily fitted up for oflice purposes as well as circumstances permi ted. (ur enterprising fellow citizens, Messrs. and T. A. Richards, owners of some of those lat- ter houses, have with commendable public spirit. m proposition to erect on liberal conditions at their own cost and expense, build- ings that will supply the long felt want, pro- mote the etticiency of the administration and be a credit to a rapidly improving part ot the city. This proposition has been accepted, the plans of Adolf Cluss, the architect, have been aproved by both parties last spring, and active buildi operations are proceeded with as rapidly as poem | work will permit. The new buildings are situated one square to the south of the Capitol, and are bounded, east and west, by New Jersey avenue and South Capitel street. The difference in the grade ef the two streets is such, that exclusive of a sub- cellar, the buildings show tive full stories on Sonth Capitol street, with a high terrace wall in rear which supports the sidewalk of Now Jer- sey avenue, whilst on New Jersey avenue only three stories and an ornamental slate roof, or a total height of « feet show above ground. ’ The a ea to be occupied by the department is irregu- lar in shape, but in the average 112 feet front by. 160 _— deep, and the buildings are centrally e lor The main building on New Jersey avenue is 77 feet long by 44 feet wide. and constructed absolately fire-proof. Connecting corridors structed of brick work, 15 feet wide by 16 fe: long, jogn the different stories to aback building having a front of 44 feet by a depth of feet. This building has hollow outside brick walls, heavy brick partitions and counter ceiled floors, se each story has a proportionate amount of ab- solute fire-proof space. The sub-cellar is al- jetted to coal cellars, boiler room for a steam heating apparatus of the whole buildings, coil chambers with ample cold air ducts from with- out. and misce!lanenus store rooms. The first full story contains the mathematical instrument shops, as well as the instrument shops of the office of (standard) weights and measures, rooms for adjusting length-measures, and so on. ‘The second story is appropriated for map rooms, records, storage of books and pa- Pers, printing press room, drying and backing rooms, instrument store rooms. The third of main story, which is three feet above the level of New Jersey avenue. contains the main en- trance, a spacious vestibule, the offices of the nt in charge, hydrographic inspector, of tidal division, disbursing agent, ottice ot weights and measures, and principally the offices of Professor Pierce. the superintendent, from which a bird's-eye view of the city anda splendid panorama of the Potomac is had. The fourth and fifth stories are occupied by the com- puting division, drawing division, hydrographic division, engraving division and’ private rooms of superintendent. Ample storage room is provided again within the steep slate roof of the main building, wh. bas ornamental iron stairs reaching trom ce! to reot. Wide corridors, dust shatus, elevators communicating with all the stor: basins and other Th accommodations are amply supplied. There are eighty-seven rooms of dif- terent sizes above the cellar, having an average clear height of twelve teet. ‘The trout on New -Jersey avenue consists of modern ornamental pressed-brick work, with heavy brown stone trimmings and belt courses, segmental window and door heads, pilasters, and other projections; main cornice of galvanized iron, slate im tasty patterns, of red, blue, and een. ©The departments of phot: electrotyping are accommodate: building in the yard, adj penter shop. The value of the improvements will be $120.4, and they therefore lead the van in the way of the building operations of this dull season. Messrs. Thomas Lewis and J. MeCullom are the contractors for brick work; M.G. Emery & Bro. for cut-stone work; Ch. Edmonston and Down- ing Brothers for carpenters’ work; Gray & Noyes for iron werk: A. K. Cover, Judge Humphreys.—On Sat- urday, Charles Schenig, convicted on the Hth inst... of aiding m the commission of a rape on Amelia Tenner, was brought into court, and his counsel, Mr. Carrington, argued in support of his motion for a new trial. which was overruled. The bill excepts to the rulings of this court on the evidence given on the trial and the charge tothe jury. The court sentenced the accused to tifteen years in the penitentiary. The court made an order granting an appeal to the Court in General Term. ‘The prisoner Temoved to jail, where he will remain until decision is given on tha appeal entered by his nel. This morning, Mr. A. K new trial in the case of Rob’t Garnett, convicte: of rape. and filed his reasons. Judge Humphr granted the motion on the ground of newly- discovered, important and material evidence. The grand jury submitted their report on the condition of the jail. They state, as usual, that the building is totally untit for the purposes of a prisen; but they had found that Gen. Tucker, a lot in square No. 559, in this city, and all his’ personal property. including cattle, farming utensils, and furniture, in Prince George county, Md., and provides that she shall support his father. He leaves his library to his brother, Samuel Tucker. His wife and Peter F. Bacon are appointed executors. The last willot F. H. Clarke, deceased, was tiled, fally | rims , and admittd to record. Christina Michel, charged with selling liquor without license to three small school boys, making them so drunk that the police had to procure a cart in which to take them home, was arraigned. The officer making the arrest net being present, the charge was not sustained, and the care was dismissed. MUSICAL THIEVES. A. Addison, Jim Wilson and «John Bender, three colored boys, were arrested for the lar- ceny Of a guitar, the property of Mrs. Murphy. ‘The proceedings in this case were suspended, and the boy Bender sent to the reform school during bis minority. A BAD son. Daniel Hill, charged with assault on William Hill. This was a stout young man, weighing pounds at least, who assaulted his father, a rather feeble old man. He was tined $5 and costs, and in default to be sent to jail for one month. George Bowie and George Henry Johnson, two colored boys, charged with larceny of and other goods. Proceedings suspended the bors sent to reform school. A LIQUOR LICENSE TEST CASE. William N. Dustin, charged with selling liqzor withont license; evidence showed that the li aor was bought and paid for. Mr. Hine, counse! for detence, contended that the defendant has the right to sell while the application for license is pending before the Board of Police. This fact was established @nd he asked a dismissal of the case. Mr. Tyler, corporation counsel, contended that this was not sufficient. A license was ne- cessary according to the laws of the corporation. ‘The court gave judgment against the defendant and fined him $20 and costs. Mr. Hine gave notice of an appeal. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. James Marlow, charged with cruel treatment of a horse, fined $3 and costs, and in default was committed to the work-house for thirty days. ‘The court adjourned till ten o'clock to-mor- row morning. ARREST OF Two Notorious Rovons.—Early yesterday morning, Officer Marden noticed two menin the course of ‘going through” a person who was taking acool napon the steps of a house on 1th street, near Pennsylvania avenue. ‘The officer arrested them; but one of the thieves offered resistance and the iceman had to draw bis pistol. They proved to be two notori- ous roughs and [epee named Jos. Atwell and Henry ‘Shadwel , denizens of Murder Bay. Otticer Barry came up and assisted Marden, and the prisoners were taken to the Central Gua: house. On being searched, a black alpacca coat, a black hat, and a pair of low quartered shoes were found on them, which had no doubt been taken from some other person found aslcep. EALING PROM A Cuvecn.—As mentioned in Saturday's Star Officer Cunningham accost- ed a man and @ boy on Saturday morning last about three o'clock on Bridge street, whe had in their possession a valuable chair and a large roll of carpet, and po them lame threw down the articles and eluded pursuit. The ar- ticles were then brought to the station house to await identification, and a Mr. Davis, who re- sides near Tennallytown and always reads Tue STAR, *aw the item. Shortly after he made certain inquiries which led to hie 5 to the station house this morning where he identitied the articles as having been stolen from Bethesda Church, tour miles beyond Tennallytown, in Montgomery county, Md. ‘THY WHEAT MARKET is very firm, there being a great scarcity of old and new wheat efterings. In consequence of the geeat demand following the war news, the farmers of Montgomery county desiring to take advantage of the in- creaséd prices are bringing their savings of the old crop into the market. A fair sample this morning, of about thirty bushels, sold at $1.65 per bushel. THE COAL TRADE is getting brisk, although some large cargoes have been shipped by the one thousand ton steam colliers Hercules and i ing the past week. ALEXANDRIA. ‘Tae Gaseite of Saturday evening has the fol- lowing items: Cosriict or AvTHonITY.—Captain James F. Webster and Lieutenant John 1. Smith, of the police force elected by the City Council, under the new police Dill, committed to jail b; order of the Mayor, on Wednesday night last, were brought before Judge Kieth, at Uhambers in the Court House, at 10 o’clock this morning, and released upon their own recognizance in the sum of $100 each. The whole matter in dis- pute was ably argued by Messrs. C. 5. Stuart and H. Q. Claughton, counsel for the Mayor, and Mesers. F.L. Smith and F. L. Swith, Jr., on the part of the Board of Police. The Judge, at two o'clock this evening, took the papers in case,and will carry them to Warrenton with him to-morrow, and give his decision some time during the week. A large crowd of spectators, including many members of the two sets of police, were present at the examination, and seemed much interested in the proceedings. Until the decision is rendered the police officers of this city will continue as at present.
