Farnsworts, GEN. BUTLER AND THE Patrick Lutrer.—Hon. John F. Farnsworth publishes a letter in the Chicago Tribune, in reply to that of Mr. B. F. Patrick, recently published, in which Mr. Farnsworth was charged with receiving $2,500 from the Fort Wayne Kail- road, as a consideration for his sending his regi- ment—the sth Illinois cavalry—over that road in the year 1862. The inference to be drawn from Mr. Patrick's letter was that General Farnsworth converted the money to his own use, though that was not asserted. General Farnsworth says that the amount which he received from the Fort Wayne Kail- Toad was $1,560), instead of $2,500; that it was received for the use of the regiment, and applied solely to that purpose, the larger portion of it being received and disbursed by the Regimental Quartermaster; that the matter wag fully ex- plained, at the time, to the special éoni- mittee of the House of Representatives on government contracts, both by himself and by Mr. Payson, of the Fort Wayne road; that he (Farnsworth) never converted a dollar of itto his own nse; but, on the contrary, ex- pended that and a large additional sum out of his own funds, for the benefit of the Sth Ilinois cavalry regiment, in procuring articles necessa- ry to their comfort not furnished by the War Department.
