EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District WASHINGTON OITY: SATURDAY........+-.00---J@ly 9, 1870. Reading Matter on Every Page. “ga” PERSONS leaving the city for the summer can have THE STAR mailed to their address by | ordering the same at the office. Terms 50 cents _ per month. soos: Many of the members of the Senate and Hoase of Representatives in the debate on the | «Tax and Tariff” bill have talked about tea, Sugar, and coffee as though they were luxuries and could as well be dispensed with as not. We tell these gentlemen that the working people of | America are not to be fed upon soup as are the poor laborers in foreign countries, and the sooner they begin to realize this fact the better for all concerned. Tea, sugar, and coffee have become and are necessitice in the family of the laboring classes of America, and will remain so. The party that seeks to deprive them of the use of these articles by voting to fer them, and thus placing them beyond their reach, will be wiser when it is too late. Everyold housewife when she to the grocery to buy her “quarter of tea,” and has to pay twenty cents a pound for it more than she would have to pay if it was not taxed, will remember to remind her husband, when | voting time comes, who it was, and df what | party, tht levied the tax; and s0 also of coffee | and sugar. All these articles should be put upon the free list, and the masses of the people will not rest until this is accomplished. The | Tevenue to support the government must be | raised from other sources than the necessary | articles of consumption among the laboring } People. Men of sense will heed this. «A word | | j } tothe wise,” " &e. +2e-- ‘The Senate of the United States, yates vets, tefused to abandon the income tax, but chose rather to dispense with the tax on gross receipts. | Let us see how this policy results in the case of | ‘Commodore Vanderbilt, the great railroad mo- nopolist of New York. The Commodore's in- come was returned for last year at $40,000, upon which he pays 5 per cent., or $2,000. He is the owner of @ majority of the stock of the New York Central railroad, of which he is the pres- | ident. The gross receipts of the road for the | past year were cightern millions of dollars. Upon this sum the company paid 2: per cent. tax, | which is ®190,000. Supposing the Commodore | to be the owner of one-half tlie stock of the | road, his share of the tax would amount to $225,000, every dollar ot which woald gointo the ‘Treasury; whereas, the $2,000 which he pays as income tax is more than half absorbed by ex- penses of collection. The result to the Treas- | which it would realize, and retains $2,000, half | of which would go ingo the pockets of officials. | This is the way that Whe Senate of the United States tgaposes to relieve the peopl of the bur- dens of taxation, but it looks very much like re- Nevin corporat ‘One of the curious phases of the etfect pro- rope is the utter failure of a movement among the speculators in Wall street to advance the price of gold. It is signiticant of the strength | 4 of our national credit, says the New York Her | aid of yesterday, that there should be only a | trifling decline in Five-twenties yesterday on the London Stock Exchage. When the weleome news of such a war—welcome forthe reason that | the flagging and declining speculation in the | Precious metal needed a fresh stimulus—burst | upon the Gold Koom the price ut its highest touched only 112%. From this figure it after- | 3 ward fell fully one per cent. The fact is, such | a war would be of great benefit to the United States, Our Five-twenties abroad would be the | only reliable security to hold when the different | countries of Europe were intreasing their na- tional debts to procure the means of carrying on hestile operations, offensive and defensive. A few of the speculative banking houses in the large European cities might probably send home their bonds in order to get gold; but the war would, on the other hand, give usa market forevery available bushel of grain and barrel of provisions we could spare from our dmestic needs, and bring us » flood of gold in return. It is statea that MoGarsaban, despite the dis- couragements he has met, proposes to persevere in pushing his claim. We are afraid McGarra- ban isa littlecracked. His claim may be all rigut for what we know, but any man who undertakes single to buck against th Tdria | Silver Mi Company is not quite sane epough to be trusted at large. That company and the Bank of California rule the Pacitic coast, and Woe be to any unfortunate individual whose | rights happen to come in conflict with their in- terests. ~<ce- In the City Court of Baltimsre yesterday | Jobn Burke obtained a verdict of $5,600 in his j favor for the killing of his son, aged 12 years, by the cars of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, near Iichester, Md..on the 4th of April, 1869. ‘The counsel for the Company have made a mo- tion for a new trial. -20e- The wood pavement question is agitating the people of Newark, N. J. Specimens of the Nicolson and Stowe wood pavements have been tested there and it is now proposed to put down the Stowe pavement in South Broad street, one | of the finest avenues in the State. -<ee- The New Yorkers are getting up considerable excitement over the Ocean Yacht Race, and the | aud made an effort to commit an ou! amault a her, but she succesfully retisted. ‘the tack andl raised the ‘neighinrs, ter = made his escape, and no 7 Hartford has “mounted letiter carriers.” ue Logan thinks she will vote in five "ap Deleali hese boat club of young ladies. This is especially the case with all who live by the sweat of their brow. From every pore of the sieve like skin Amolsture exudes which contains the elements of vitality.
