Morse, of Washington, a corporation cohtractor, who was so sanguine of the result of the muni- cipal election that he bet with Mr. E. B. Hughes, of the Navy Yard, that if Mr. Bowen was not re-elected he would crawl on his belly irom the City Hall, in Washington, te George- town, a distance of about three miles, and over Streets very rough and muddy at this season. He ‘fost the bet, and crawied three miles on his belly, in accordance with the t, in the Presence of a large crowd, reeree by a band of music. His weight was 170 pounds.—Stairs- ville (N. C.) American, July 4, 18:0. Our North Carolina cotemporary is correct in the mafn in regard to the extraordinary feat of our distinguished belly-bunter, Major Morse, but makes a mistake about his weight, which was 70 instead of 170. The North Caro- lina paper does not seem to have received in- formation of the melanchely wel of the Major's gallant effort—his untimely end in a Bowen mud-hole when in sight of his goal. Who would not sing for Lycidas? He knew Himself to sing, and buiid the lofty rhyme.
