HOUSE.—After oar report closed—the Presi- dent's mestage vetoing the bill to extend the entof Koilin Whit> being under considera ton—a sharp peroneal dixew-siom took placo between Messrs. Butle and Farpsworth. A CCENS IN TH HOUSE. Mr. Butler (Mass ) was proccoding to speak in | fatal wounds the bills when Mr. Farnsworth, of the point of order that the gentleman rily interested in the case, and that suppor TL, rais was pec a certifica desk would show that he had received a tee of two thousand dollars to advocate the extension of this patent. | Mr, Butier said that he did not wish to be | interrupted by @ man with more beard than brains. Mr. Farnsworth retorted that no one should come in here and steal under the shadow of his beard. He insisted upon hi= point of order. The Speaker hat read by tae Clerk the rule, that no member shall be any measure in which he is immediately inter- csted, &c., and decided the point not well taken, as Mr. Butler was onty debating the question. Mr. Farnsworth insisted that the eertiicate should be read. Mr. Butler, who had gone to the Ulerk’s desk and read the paper. desired it read, saying when it was read it would brand the statement of the gentleman as false, :alicious and infamous. Mr. Farnsworth was about to read the certiti- cate, when Mr. Butler said he preferred the Clerk to read it. He wanted it read by some- body who could read. The Clerk then read a certified transcript from papers in the Patent Uttice, by which it appeared that in Ist he had written a letter to the Com- missioner. in which he said that the United States and certain citizens of Massachusetts would be affected by the reissue of White’s"pat- ent, and asking to be informed if he made an appheation for an extension; and that in 1360 Mr. White paid to Mr. Butler $2,000 for his ser- vices in the Supreme Court. Mr. Farnsworth called the attention of the | House to the fact that the schedule of White showed that he had rewarded the gentleman by the pay ment of $2,900 as counsel fees. He would 20 state what did not show in the certiticate read, but it was shown in the Supreme Court, that the gentleman did not say a word in the case in the Supreme Court, but simply filed a short and insignificant brief to show that he had done something in that court. Mr. Butler replied in very severe language. and explained his connection with Mr. White's application. He spent four weeks in preparing the brief wh.ch the gentleman had declared in- significant. amined, many of them French, brief he received a tee of $2,000. There Was then po application pending in the House, and he did not know that there ever would be ‘The gentleman from Illinois would never make such a brief as that—would never be employed in the case, and there was no danger of his ever receiting a few of $2, He appealed to the committee to state if he had ever been to the committee about the bill. He had not voted on House, and had not attempted to secure Semate, or its being signed by nt. He bad declined to speak upon the House when asked to do so. He did not intend to speak upon it, and had only spoken because he had learned that an attempt was to be made to introduce this certiticate in the manner it had been done. He said upon this slender foundation the charge had been pat forth, and the legislation of the country inter- rupted by this attempt by premeditated attack to strike an unprepared man. He character- ized the attempt as the blow of a coward and assassin A heavy blow of the Speaker's hammer sus- nd for that There were nineteen patents ex- | fe ) Se | she left dresses to | character were repulsive to the lady, and his | ever be more fortunate in tance. | them into the boar: Fremont and others gave rise to a warm | yas! | On Sunday Morr! jowed t> vote upon | He 5 | purse, paid the fine, Soparted. (A pause.) | He would repeat that a premeditated attack | upon a gentleman who was unprepared was the blow of a coward and an assassin. Even the Speaker's hammer would not dissent from that. | It was wel of fe known that there was a difference ng between the gentleman (Mr. Farns- worth] and himself, but he had not brought | them into the House. When he did he woul bring himself to the level of his assailant. ‘Not till then—not till then, thank God.” He would leave it to any lawyer that a confidi client in @ country court would trust fifty dot lars, and who could read the language, to say if the fee was not a reasonable one. ‘The House then refused to pass the bill over the veto—ayes 12, nays 165. The bill to incorporate the National Juaction | Railway Company of the District of Columbia was then taken up, the Senate amendment con curred in, and the bill passed. | The Senate amendments to the bill to suspend the sale ef certain lands in California granted to the Southern Pacific Railroad were, after some discussion concurred in,and the bill passed. ‘The House bill to provide for the apportion ment of Kepresentatives in Congress among the several Statos gave rise to an animated and ex- cited struggle, and the House at 4.55 p. m. ad- journed. +<oe- &7-Some Chicago sharpers have been sending Mississipp: planters a lot of whiskey-guzaling loafers as ‘‘farm hands,” collecting a per capita in advance.
