A lengthy debate then ensued be- tween Messrs. Howard, Nye, Sherman and other: arguing that there was no jast claim npon | the government for these stores, and that the Feeuft would be to baakrupt the Treasury. Without action, the Senate, at 10:15 p. m.,ad- jourped. HOUSE.—After our report closed— ‘The internal tax bill being under consi tien, the motion to lay on the tablethe motion te reconsider the vote by which the previous question was ordered on Mr. Schenck’s tariff amendment to the bill prevailed—ayes 116, noes tt The amendment (the first seetion of the tariff Dill) was then ad 139 to 43.
