EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District CROSBY S. NOYES. s+ses Editor. WASHINGTON OITy: TUESDAY... .s00-000-00-Fame 7, 1970. Reading Matter on Every Page. #7 Persons leaving the city for the summer can have Tae Stam mailed to their address by ordering the same at the office. Terms 50 cents Ler moth. +s10-- ‘Tee Hover Commrrresz oy THE DistRicr oF | CoLt B14 met this morning, but took no action on any bills except to refer the bills which re~ | cently psssed the Senote to sub committees, to be rc ported back hereafter. ++02- — Tue Pexwsytvanra Coat Teape— The @.thracite coal trade is in mu 3 dition asa weed ago. Ong sumed work in the Schuylkill region last ik. but there is as et no decided oe of Tal rerumption, while dn the igh and troduction is un | Wyominy usually active, and . ang ale to the current de~ | mand for coal, to fit of labor at the | mines there, the coal Sante, and the carry- ing companies. ——___--.ee--—______ SF The Southern Baptists contributed i288 | than six cente per member last year. | 7 Mrs. Annie Holmes. of Jersey City, N. J., was thrown down a hundred steps on Jersey } husband on by her on Saturday, | and died of her injuries on Sunday. di We have never scen Washington looking so happy as to-day. There is a sort of millenial, glorious biaze of content on the face of everybody you meet delightfal to behold. | We say everybody, because the Bowen crowd Dave retired to such strict seclusion that nota ‘man of them has been seen to-day. The Great Bogus is missing from the City Hall; Cook is net to be found; nor a sign of the rest of that fweet-scented gang—Morse, Peck, C. B. Baker, Uriah H. Painter, Penitentiary Bowie, * Colonel” Jim O” Beirne, Penitentiary Sorrell, Nott, Hanna, Himber, Fred. Aiken, Chauncey Snow, Doc. Sylvester, tal. All, all are mise- ing from the scenes that knew them. Gone, gone are they where the woodbine twineth. But they are not missed. We are happy without them. Tue Stak asthe first paper to take ground Yor Mr. Emery, naturally fells quite sunny over yesterdays result. That result, through the | Feports im our different extras, was given at yoon yesterday very definitely. At that hour We announced that Mr. Emery had carried | ‘every ward in this city by a majority that we estimated at close upon 3,500. The official | Feturn shows his majority to be 3,219. In the dast edition of Taz Stak, at7 o'clock, p. m., we ‘were able to give the returns with almost official exactness; showing that Taz Stax is always right. ‘The sale of the different editions of Tax Stan esterday was enormous, surpassing anything since war times, and showing the intense inter- est felt by the people of this community in the result of the great battle made against the ring ‘The election of Mr. Emery has served to create & general feeling of hopefulness in the commu- nity, and especially amongst our business men, whose interests have been so seriously crippled | ter under the Bowen role. On Monday next Mr. | Emery will be inaugurated Mayor of Washing- | ton, and then we may hope the good work of municipal reform will be entered upon. —-s02- — One of the most gratifying features of the glorious success of the Reform ticket yesterday | Was the very handsome support given to it by our colored citizens. The infamous attempt made by the City Hall Ring to hold them in bondage, by preparing marked ballots and | threatening to “spot” every colored man who | ‘Gid not vote them, was treated with the scorn it deserved. Doubtless many worthy and well Ineaning persons were intimidated by these threats into voting for Bowen, bat the majority f his colored supporters were found to be the rowdies and vagabonds, who are alike a terror do the city and a disgrace to their race. Those ‘Who voted thus were actuated by different mo- tives. Some feared the threats so openly and de- fantly made, while others imagined that their interest, for the time being, at least, was in iden- tifying themselves with the Ring. On the other band, the respectable thinking portion of our écnafde colored citizens were wise enough to un- Gerstand that their prosperity depends upon the Prosperity, growth, and improvement of Wash- ingten city, ami they had the courage to back By their convictions by their ballots, which were Cast almost solid for Emery and Reform. The terrorism set up by the drill-masters and bullies } Of the King lost its foree when weighed against their permanent welfare and that of their chil- Gren and their children’s children, and they accordingly despised the threat and spurned the bribe. Allhonor to the noble band! By this uct they have vindicated their manhood, and Cemonstrated in the most conelusive manner that they are freemen indeed. i» fact ae wou a —-+e-- In his overwhelming defeat, Mayor Bowen is Said to feel most disappointed and down-cast | Over the firm and steady refusal of the Presi- | Cent and his Cabinet to espouse his canse as | Bgainst that of Mr. Emery. And wellhe may de. Never was a want of confidence more Plainly expressed nor a rebake more pointedly Sdministered. Yet Mr. Bowen had no right to expect anything else. He is no better Repub- ican than Mr. Emery, it so good; and beside, he had the load of two years of his own mala- ministration and all the frauds and crimes of the corrupt and wicked ring about him to carry, while Mr. Emery had no such sins to answer Yor, and possessed, in addition, as he well de- Served, the respect and confidence of all good | men. Mr. Bowem found himseif, therefore, in Precisely the attitude in which any person might expect to be, and ought to be, who had thrown away his opportunities and betrayed his trusts as he has done. Weil may he be disap- Pointed and downeast. Let him adopt the lan- guage ot Wolsey and exclaim : “« Oh, Cookey, Cookey ! Had I but serv'd my God with half the zeal A serv'd the King, He would not in mi Have left me naked to mine enemies. ——————0e-_____ Mayor Emery is likely to feel the responsibil- ities of office before he enters upon its duties. ‘We estimate that not less than five hundred petitions are in circulation to-day by appli- ants for ward office; and it is known that Quite & number of applicants took time by the forelock, and sent in their petitions to Mr. Emery weeks ago. He is not a man, bowever, to make rash promises, and we Coubt not he will make the appointment of good men to office a main plank of his reform Platform. He must avoid the rocks that sunk Bowen, and in all his appointments, from Cor- Poration Attorney down, must carefully avoid the selection of mere pettifoggers, shysters, and ringmen. The people have elected Mr. Emery # most solely on the belief that he will drive out the thieves and cormorants at the City Hall, and > datitute honest, capable officers.
