EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District CROSBY 8S. NOYES.. -Editor. WASHINGTON OIry: MONDAY. ++.Sume 6, 1970. Reading Matter on Every Page. EMERY SWEEPS THE CITY !i! Overwhelming Reform Triumph! Majority in _Every Ward! Aswe go to press with this edition at five o'clock, the election is progressing quictiy tn every ward, and the indications are that Emery will be elected by a handsome majority. The colored voters, and voters of foreign birth, to whom the Bowen ring have made such frantic appeals, are voting for Emery to an extent scarcely hoped for by the most sanguine Reform- ers. Bets are freely of ered ag we go to press that Emery will carry every ward in the city except the Second, an: some bets have even been made epon that Ward. it is claimed by good jadges that the First Ward will give Emery 550 majority; the Third Ward 709 majority; Fourth Ward 650 majority; Fifth Ward 29) majority; Sixth Ward 575 ma- Jority ; Seventh Ward 1,000 to 1,200 majority. An even bet was made in the Seventh Ward this morning that Bowen would not get 500 | votes in that Ward. While we hope that the | majorities will fully come up to this mark, we trust that no Emery voter will keep away from the polls with the idea that his vote will not be | needed. We want to make Emery’s majority so large that the villainous ring will not dare to attempt to cheat him out of his seat. ae eee WON’T BET! The Bowen men accepted a few bets early in the morning, more to shows bold front than anything else, but as the intelligence began to circulate from one ward to another of the way the Emery vote was piling up, and especially of the superb manner in which the colered voters were coming up tothe support of the Reform ticket, the Bowenites lost all heart and could not be induced to take a bet at any odds. At one o'clock Mr. John P. Hilton was on a sharp hunt for any Bowenite willing to risk any | money on the Great Bogus. Hilton oifered | a $1,000 to $500 that Emery would be elected, and also offered $50 to anybody who would get the bet taken. No takers. —-+<ee-—_____ We have never seen anything more infamous | tm journalism than the attempt of the Chrom this morning to assure fraudulent Foters that they will be “protected” in attempt- ing to east illegal votes.
