EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District CROSBY 8S. NOYES... -Editer. WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY... May 20, 1870, Reading Matter on Every Page. It iNustrates the reckless unscrupnionsness of partiean wartare that the Bowen crowd who one | year ago held Matthew G@. Emery to be a sound | Republican, an excellent citizen, and © man every way fitted for official position, should have suddenly discovered that he is rotten politically, bas no capacity whatever for public business, and is only fit for the shades of private life. One day they berate him as a dyed-in-the-wool Deniocrat, and the next with notable incon- sistency they assure everybody that he is a terrible Know-Nothing. aryl that the main busi- ‘Dees of his life is to go about with a dark-lantern at the head of a gang of Baltimore “Plugs,” gunning after Democrats, Catholics, and Israel. ites! Such senseless abuse as this is sure to over-shoot the mark; and we happen to know ‘that in the case of Mr. Emery, it has caused Bumbers of our Catholic citizens, and citizens of foreign birth, who do not al- ways take part in our municipal elections, to go to him and say that the manner in which he is being maligned, solely because he has ‘been put forward as a Reform candidate in op- Position to Mr. Bowen, has caused them to de- termine to-register and to vote for him without fail. We could mention a prominent business frm in this city, the members ef which are all Catholics, and all of foreign descent, who have thrown all the weight of their extensive intiu- €nce into the canvass in behalf of Mr. Emery, Solely on account of the idiotic lies put forward by the City Hall ring, charging him with Know- Nothingism. We could mention a respected Catholic priest of this city, who follows the even tenor of a useful life, never dabbling in politics, Dut who indignant at these falsehoods against ‘One he has known and esteemed for years, wait- €4 on Mr. Emery to assure him of his support. In another instance a citizen of prominence, in _ Feligion a Catholic, and who would grace any Official position, was {invited to aecept a yee? cratic nomination for the mayoralty, but promptly declined, saying that if he had a hun- Gred votes they would be given for Matthew G. Emery, believing him to be—regardiess of his Kepubliean politics, to which he was opposed— the man best fitted to reseue the city from its Ceplorable financial condition. The fact that several Irish Kepublican clubs of large mem- bersbip have ran up the Emery flag, and the enthusiastic reception given Mr. Emery by the Schuetzen Verein the other day, shows what our citizens of those national- ities think of these slanders. The truth is, that Mr. Emery is too well known and too highly appreciated in this community for detraction of tus kind to have the slightest hold upon him, and it simply serves to rally to his support the friends and neighbors who know him thoronghiy, and trust him entirely. They know him as a fair- minded, honorable, kind-hearted man who will to do right and serve his fellow-citizens to the best of his ability without question as to religion or nativity. It is quite idle to tell these friends and neighbors, (and this list embraces the entire community,) who have grown up with him and Know every act of his honora- Die unassuming career, that he will, on Teaching tle Mayor's chair, be suddenly converted into a Lar-b, rarrow-minded, intolerant bigot. They €on't believe i ee ae Pricks Comixc Dows—Brother William A. Cook who offers to bet Brother Harkness two hundred dollars and bis gold watch that he has more vital religion than Brother H., has tixed the price of getting bills through the Mayor's ottice at 600. But Brother Sella Martin, whose strong hold has also been his vital retigion, seems disposed to undersel! Brother Cook. He, it seems, is charged with selling his inttuence, | and ou a Sunday morning too, for $19), to pro- cure a contract for a party named Stewart. ‘The tact is not denied, but it is stated in his be- halt that he received the money for getting a | contract “for a friend.” Brother’ Cook bied | Brother MeCielland to the extent of 2600 in the name of “the party.” Brother Martin bleeds Brother Stewart to the extent of 400 in the name of friendship. It is no doubt all right according to ring ethics, but the distinguishing | feature about the transaction is that it denotes &# remarkable fall in jobbing prices. This results no doubt from the competition between Brother Cook and Brother Martin for business. Brother | Cook must come down. Brother Martin is | equally sound on polities and piety, and has an equal claim on the tiesk pots. Brother Martin has also some special claim for a share of the good things going, as he has just swung out im belalf of Bowen in the paper he edits here— the Era.
