THE ADJOURNMENT QUESTION—A Saarr TALE IN THE SENATE.—There was quite a heated debate in the Senate to-day, on the House resolution to adjourn on the 4th of July. Mr. Drake denounced the action of the republi- cans who voted with the democrats in favor of the resolution, stating that he desired that fact known to the country. Mr. Cameron retorted sharply to Mr. Drake, and he was followed by ipton, who thought the practice of at. tumpting to dragoon Senators into certain meas- ures, such as just attempted by Mr. Drake, was odious, The Vice President called oe core , ought this practice had already gone too far. The editor of the Washington Chronicle all the winter bad been attempting to whip republican Sena- tors in with the party lash, and now it must be stopped. ‘Tne morning hour having expired, the bill to enforce the fi nth amendment was laid aside informally, and finally the resolution was amended by inserting the 15th of duly, instead Mr. man to order, id Mr. I. retracted, but of the 4th. At halt-past two o'clock the House agreed to the Senate amendment to the adjournment res. olution; hence Congress will adjourn on the 15th of July. Tae House DevaTEs THE CATHOLIC Ques- TioN.—There was one of the sharpest debates of the session in the House yesterday afternoon on the question of providing in the diplomatic bill for a mission to Rome. The bil! only provided for a consul, and Mr. Brooks proposed to substi- tute a minister resident, and in the course of the discussion the de e democratic members charged that the republicans op da mission there on the ground of the us tenets which held sway in Rome, and eftee he fact thatin the next line of the bill provision was made for a minister te the Pelygemous country of er tublican denied Some of the rep members and others did not. Mr. Bingham, of Ohio, defied the democratic members to endorse the doctrine of infallibility proposed in the Eeu- menical Council, and denounced itas an at- edem of thought, of con- Science and of the preas. Mr. Day —— Mi 3 tempt to fetter the fre: ir. Brooks with having been a know noth: Mr. Erooks replied that Mr. Dawes told a talae- hood, and knew it was a falsehood while he was telling it.
