dl —_—_—_ Se ‘TO THE LADIES EMPLOYED IN THE | _EVENING STAR. |e aE Largest Circulation in the District |= “WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY...... April 29, 1870. _Reading Matter on Every Page. ” ReLier FoR tHe Ricumoxp " SurrEnens.— By reference to the notice in another column it will be seen that measures have been taken here to afford relief to those sufferers by the late awful calamity at Richmond who are in need of material aid. The object is one which must appeal to the sympathy and purse of every one, and we trust that the offerings from Washing- ton will be both numerous and liberal. Contri- butions in any amount, intended for this pur- pose, may be left at the counting-room of THE ‘STAR office, where a subscription Paper will be found. —___++e2- A Country Wirsovr a Name—A corres- pondent of the Newark Advertiser, alive to the fact that our country has no ive name, Or at least none that is convenient or in common use,—the term “‘American,”’ which we general- ly appropriate, being equally applicable to the citizen of any other country on the western hemisphere, —recommends that the centennial anniversary of the declaration of independence be made the occasion for officially adopt- ing and promulgating a new name for the country and that the new title be Wasa- inctox. The writer also ventures to indicate & programme suitable for the proposed national christening ceremony, which embraces “the reading of the Declaration of Independence by one of the most respectable men in our coun- try, of a hundred years of age or more; the read- ing of Everett's oration on Washington by an accomplished elocutionist ; an original address by some prominent patriot or statesman; music from a hundred bands; religious services by two or three of the most aged clergymen in the country; the proclamation of our new national name by the then President of the United States; the name itself, ‘Washington,’ to be pro- nounced precisely at high noon, and to be ac- companied by the booming of thousands of can- non in every city, town, and village throughout the land, the salutes to commence at 12 o'clock, Washington city time.” The project is not without merit, and, in some shape or other, it will very likely find favor with & good many; but we do not expect to see it car- ried out. Our people are too busy, and of too practical a turn of mind, to attend to any thing which is not required by the most imperative necessity or does not promise immediate and important material advantages. Everything for collars—nothing for ideas, is the rule. -soe- The latest statement in regard te Captain Eyre, of the “ Bombay,” is that he would have Stopped his vessel after running into the “Onei- da” but for the imploring of Lady Temple, the wife of the British Minister, who was appre- hensive of shipwreck. This, if true, shows that he is a weak rather than a bad man, fut it does not better his case any. His place at such a time was upon the wheel-house, where he could have found better business than listening to Lady Temple or any other voice than that of duty. +20-- e ‘The reasons why the income tax law should not be re-enacted are very tersely and forcibly fet forth by Gen. Negley, who represents the Pittsburgh district in Congress. He avers “that it is unconstitutional; that it was a war measure; that it makes the people a nation of liars; that it bears unequally upen rich and poor; and that there is no necessity for it. ——++ee- Reports of the condition of the crops in Mary- land continue favorable. In Carroll county wheat and oats look well; more grain has been seeded than formerly. In Anne Arundel there Will be alarge crop of grain and grass. The peach crop in Queen Anne’s will surpass that of Jast year. In Somerset a fair crop of fruit is in- dicated. ee —___ Mr. Charles S. Spencer, one of the counsel for the defence of McFarland, has been mus- tered out of the case for writing a letter to ‘Theodore Tilton. The indiscretion is apparent, but we had no idea that a man would be p ished so severely for committing it; at least not in New York —__++ee- 87 The Good ‘Templars of Maine will pomi- nate a Governor. a Franklin is 2 on observed of all ob- Servers in Sai NG; SOCIET il plac: cy mnbtviats Poet IN At Lincoln Hall at te a. a active members is” re- L. The sick can no longer be persuaded that the best way to cure them is to destroy the little strength that disease has left them. Dyspeptics, instead of dosing themselves with ep- som salts, aloes, colycinth, jalap, and otner powerful cathartics, tone their digestive organs and regulate their bowels with HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. Persons of billious habits, instead of throwing the whole glandular «ystem into a state of morbid irri- tation with mercurial poison, seek relief, and find it, in the operation of that wholesome vegetable altera- tive upon the disordered liver. Nervous sufferers, tremulous, weak and despon- dent, recruit their shattered energies with a course | of the great invigorant, and bless the day when the adulterated liquors of commerce were superseded by ‘© medicated stimulant, perfectly efficient and en- tirely harmless. Travelers by land and sea rejoice in the possession of an agreeable corrective, which protects them from the evil effects of malaria, from sea sickness, and from the disturbing influences of changes of temperature, and change of water. The weak and debilitated feel their strength re- turn, and their spirits revive ander its bracing, ap- Detizing, gently exhilarating action.
