OVERED AT heophi¥te- cael Zehweskotski | one of ‘leverest pupils of Baron — ha just made an astounding discovery in chemistry. viz. : the silicious and alaminous ethers. [tis but necessary to pour into a champagne-glass s certain quantity of these two ethers to produce almost instantaneously the most magnificent stones; combined with very pure oxide of iron the aluminous ether produces ruby; with sal- phate of copper, the sapphire; with salts of manganese, the amethyst: with salts of uickle, theemerali; with ealtsof chrome the silicious | ether prodaces the different coloratiens of topaz. These ethers evaporate with a yoni tive perfume, which several ms have de- clared to be very agreeable. The saltscrystallize very regularly assoon asthe liquid part has gone. ‘The corindons obtained through this means are not quite as hard as the natural ones; but, if the operation is carefully done, the brillianey is admirable. The silica and the alumina which Constitutes the earths and clays are Psy ‘inciples easily found in the different parts of lobe; and the preparations of the new ethers, though delicate, costs very little. This discovery will bring forth a revolution not only in jewelry, but in most ot our industrial arts. ———— FREDERICKSBURG AND GORDONSVILLE RAIL- Roap.—The company under whose management this road is being Constructed seem to have gone to work in real earnest, and are deter- mined to make short work of its constraction. ‘The corapany has purchased 4,000 tons of T iron already, and enough, we understand, to com- plete it fo Orange Ceurt House, a distance of 39 miles. Hands ill immediately be set to work in grading the road, bai idges sills and ‘crow-ties and rallee Alldti@cultice about this road have been removed that exist- ed, and old debts due contractors, workmen, &e., are being speedily liquidated."
