EVENING STAR. Largest Circalation inthe District | WASHINGTON CITY: ‘WEDNESDAY........-.-April 13, 1970. | _Reading Matter on Every Page. ‘The “Reform Republicans,” at their meeting a! Union League Hall last night, proceeded to make @ nomination for the Mayoralty, putting Mr. M. G. Emery formally nto the tield. This ction was rather unexpected. for the reason ibat the meeting was not called as a nominating Inceting, and it was supposed that the policy of the « ” was to unite all the elements | ©f opposition to what is called the “City Hall Ying,” and make the campaign one for “mea- Sures, pot men.”” It looks now very much as if the contest for the Mayoralty would be a scrub race, with half ® dozen different candidates in the field, in- Cluding a straightout Democratic candidate, for we hear that some of the old Democratic coons, encouraged by the demoralization of their nents, are peeping out of their holes, and that ©x-Mayor Berrett really has aspirations for his old chair. Shoald these Democrats of the olden dime put a tieket im the field the result will, of course, be the same asin years past—not their own defeat, but the defeat of all attempts in the direction of improvement and reform. But these Uld Bourbons never learn anything and never forget anything. —There is undoubtedly a wide-spread feeling Of dissatisfaction in regard to the management of various departments of city affairs, and the clements of discontent are strong enough, if united, to clean out things in a wholesome way; but if the “ Reformers” expect to make any headway against their adroit, unscrupulous, ‘well-organized opponents of the “ ring’ by scattery guerilla fighting, they are mistaken. Dhey will have to mass their forces. Mr. Em- ry isa good, useful, upright citizen, entirely wnobjectionable as a candidate for the mayor- alty, but itwill simply be leading him like a lamb to the slaughter to put him on the track Prematurely and without a solid backing. +20e- Thesmerteet Commodore Selfridge on the survey of the Isthmes of Darien tor an inter- oceanic ship canal to show that the high mountains, rocky surface and dense under- growth of the country. together with the | Bs hostility of the Indians, have prevented any success so far. It is known that quite a large number of the large corporations of the country are refusing to pay any further income tax on their divi- dends, holding that those to whom they are due are not chargeable with the income tax after the year 1869, and the Pennsylvania Central Kailroad Company has obtained the written opinion of eminent counsel sanctioning this re- fural. In view of these circumstances, the In- terna} Kevenue Department is in perplexity whether te make seizures or not ——-~ee- Mr.-lohn T.
