FRIDAY.......... Reading Matter on Every Page. Want of Fresh Air. Error Star :—On Tuesday evening, at the Unitarian Chereh, Dr. Bellows, of New pone delivered an able and eloquent discourse uj the nature of a true Christian council. Tae — and eloquent orator could not fail i | ‘an impression upon his —y seldom has orator spoken under aah divadvantages of physical discomfort to his lis- is responsible for the heated, stined atmo here of the place we do not know but this we do knew: that not even the angel Gabriel could have a moral right to be listened to under such conditions as oppremed the au- dience at that chureh on that evening. 7 held themselves very quict—breathlessly (they couiein’t breathe!) A few were oblij Sims for the doer before the sermon was cloved: many took advantage of the rising of the con- gregation for the last s eg © oeee ten he paintul reminder of the Calcutta black hole— mong whom was the complainant—and whether any remained to the final close we are unable tossy. A friend who sometimes att other churches in the city tells me that this hot at- mesphere, poisoned by the rebreathingof mat be is a condition with evening ega- tions in several churches here, and that when he bas been to church he has sometimes been “‘ atraid he was in the other place ””’ and, indeed, he had been obliged to give up going where Nentilation was ‘so absolutely ignored. Is * everybody’s business nobody's "fs there no one. oF ne number of persons, whose duty it is to see that the public are not entrapped into such a struggle for existence asa crowded house without proper ventilation imposes upon the sufferers ? Washington, March 23, 1570. H.C. 1. Our corfespondent tells some home truths, but she will excuse us for saying that the fault of bad ventilation in the ehureh, the lectare room and the school room is in nine cases out ef ten due to her own sex. The love of pure air and plenty of it is a wrinkle that our Ameri- can women will have to acquire from their healthier sisters on the other side of the Atlantic. Let an unsophistitated janitor undertake to let down the windows in a crowded room and he will be very soon reminded by some delicate ‘wasp-waisted beauty of half-pint lung capacity that the ventilating apparatus is not made for use. We remember when John B. Gongh lectured some years ago in the lecture room of the 4 street Presbyterian Church. The room was packed with human beings, the atmosphere Soon grew most oppressive, one or two fainted, but though there were abundant means of ven- tilation they could not be made available, the moment the attempt was made to let down a window the eighth of an inch there was a@ protest from the female quarter. We witnessed precisely the same thing at a Sun- day school festival recently, wherethe audience Was packed like herrings, and the state of the atmosphere was shown by the moisture upon the windows and the flushed faces of the children; but through the whole evening not a breath of fresh air was permitted to enter, because two or three bare-neckedwomen objected. Theresult was that the children emerged, recking with perspiration, into the cooler air, and we doubt not that many laid the foundations of disease leading to the grave from the sudden change. A few days ago a gentleman told us that he vis- ited @ scheol-reom in which there were some eizhty -cholars—a small room with low ceilings, no air allowed to enter at the windows, (which were arranged to let down from the top,) and the atmosphere close and fetid beyond descrip- tion. The teacher, a really sensible and aecom- plished young lady, did not seem to have the slightest idea that there was anything wrong about the ventilation of her room. We wish our correspondent God speed in her work of reform in this matter, but we would = soggest that it will be necessary for her to begin | with her own sisterhood. teee- The Registration commences on Monday, and We would suggest that it is the duty of every good citizen to see that his name is enrolled. We have little sympathy with those who neglect to take the trouble of registering or voting and who afterwards complain that their taxes are too high, the city money squandered, and every- thing going wrong. The citizen who docs his duty by registering, attending his ward meeting to secure the nomination of good, competent | men for office, and by afterwards going to the polls'to vote for such nominees, has some right to grumble if municipal affairs are badly man- aged; but the stay-at-liome class referred to have not. It is this apathy on the part of those most directly interested, as tax-payers, or as having permanent interests In the city, that causes the machinery of ward politics to fall into the hands of mere ward politicians, who use if, of course, for the grinding of their own axes. —+200- Several new railroad enterprises have been warmed into activity by the early prospect of the completion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Koad across the Alleghanies. The Fredericks barg and Gordonsville and the Kichmond and Newport News Koads are among these in Virgin. ia. In Kentucky, there isthe Eastern Kentucky Koad, now constructing from Greenupsburg to an (nterseetion with the Ehzabethtown, Lexing- ton and Big Sandy Road. In Uhio are the Cin- cimmati and Chesapeake Kailroads connecting | Port-mouth with Connecticut by the river route | with an average grade of six inchesto the mile. ‘The Iron Railroad Co. of Obie are also gz an extension of their line to Columbus, at which point it will connect with the reads to all | remitted ey points North and West. — a Despite some squirming on the part of the Democrats of the old school, it is quite evident that the mass of the Democracy mean to make asharp fight with the Republicans for the col- ored vote under the Fifteenth Amendment. At the Kepublican primary election in Indian- apotis, a few days ago, the colored citizens were permitted to vote, thus recognizing the Fifteenth Amendment. So anxious were the Democracy to manifest their ‘acceptance of the situation” by voting with the colored man that large num- bers of them voted also. To such anextent was | this carried, that the whole vote cast was 6,700— 2,300 more than the vote polled tor Grant at the last presidential election, and within 1,900 of the combined vote of Grant and Seymour. ——- +++ 202e-—- ‘The Tweed-le-dam Tweedle-dee | collateral are still su for | Telegraphed | rvey- | au Sa | | “FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. _EVENING STAR. | In the New York money market there is rather } Sane inane foome, oe, stock brokers, who are ~dieeapeoesoreitir at five per cent. al- are reported as high as six.
