- EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY.... .March 15, 1870. Reading Matter on Every Page. Reeeptions. ‘The next reception of the Speaker of the House will be on Friday evening, March 18th, from 9 to 11 o'clock. —_+~ee--_____ And now the Chronicie argues that the people of the District are sacrificing material things for immaterial things in seeking for an umproved form of government; and intimates that the ma- terial things are the World's Fair project, and subscription by the city of $580,000 to the Bal- timore and Potomac Railroad. If the Chronicle chooses to incite further pursuit of that exceed- ingly evavsive light of the bog,—the hope that Congress will give any adequate endorsement to the World's Fair project,—we have no earthly objection, and wish the chase all manner of suc- cess; but in the name of the long suffering and much swindled tax-payers of Washington we protest against them to the extent of half a million of dollars for this raitroad job. ‘The money might just as well be sunk in the Potomac, so far as W: is concerned The road will be built to Washington all the same whether the money is contributed or not. ‘The great railroad interest controlling this road do not need the money, and the contribution, large-as it is for us, would give us not the slight- est voice in the management of the road. In fact, the money would be yet more foolishly thrown away than that squandered upon the ment, but also to secure voice enough in its management to prevent it from. against Washington in the matter of freight. The gentlemen who owned the charter of the Baltimore and Potomac road made a very nice ‘thing of it in selling on: {to the present company to the tune of €25,000 each, and we doubt not the $500,000 asked from the city would divide around very handsomely among a small party of operators; but when the corporation invests in railroads again we trust it will be to build roads of her ewn, or to aid struggimg enter- prises that may not otherwise succeed, and which will be glad to concede to her a contral- ing influence in their mauagement in return for such aid. ————_-~+ee--_____ The Baltimore and Vhio Railroad comes out ahead again in its contest with the State gov- ernment of Maryland about paying over the capitation tax. The House bill authorizing Governor Bowie to issue a writ of actre facias to vacate the charter of the company for its mis- uses of its franchises—in other words, its retusa! to pay over the capitation tax—has been defeat- ed in the Senate bya decisive vote. This virtu- ally ends the question, as it is not doubted that if carried to the courts they would decide the tax unconstitutional and illegal. The Baltimore American, commenting upon the case, says per- tinently: “ In the mean Lg eg cor continues to play the jl a “7 ‘ait ee ees « 1 win, tails exacts from e Between Washington aud Baltimore they tion tax of twenty-a re cents, and pleads 9 the State that the tax is notori ly illegal, bas to beso in the \ walla cube, am therefore it cannot for a B ire ieee! consider the itover to the State. Let the Solonsstand forth. Pro- duce the heads. Set them to wagging. Let them engineer. Let them engineer quietly, or let them engineer explosively; but by all means let them engineer. And when they have engi- neered a few years let the Chronicle report pro- gress. ‘These are the men we are looking for—wise men and engineers who can manage Congress, and induce that body to give something more than seven and a half hours per year to the Dis- triet with its population of 170,000 people. We have had Mayor Bowen and Corporation At- torney Cook on the alert there, and their heads are supposed to be level; and the Citizens’ Com- mittee, believed to contain some average heads, have been pegging away. ‘Then there are ptenty of independent skirmishers on hand there daily— Councilman Jo. Williams, Dr. Boyd and the restofthem. But they are all no good. Their heads are not up to the mark. Now let the Chronicle produce its reserve of wise and saga- cious heads. If there are too many let them be sealed down. Let Prof. Fowler feel of them and select the best. Then let the elect sail in with a full head of steam, wisdom and sagacity on, and astonish C.mgress and the Distriet Com- mittees. 22+ —___ Jim Fisk lately used this remarkable figure of Speech in regard to Sam. Barlow, one of his antagonists. He charged Sam with “pirating around to see what he could root out,” and said he had “struck @ barren placer which 4id not pan out enough to pay for the court plaster to cover the raw spot which his rooting made on the end of his nose.” Fisk rather as- tonished the grave and reverend seignors of the House Gold In Committee by the tropical luxuriance of his illustrations; but this Father cape all his previous efforts, The New York Herald now predicts “the overthrow of the Democratic party in the next State election, and with the loss of New York the rapid disintegration and dissolution of the party throughout the United States.” From J. Canker or dry rot does not blast a tree as suddenly ase atroke of lightning, ‘but unless arrested it destroys it as certainly; and in like manner chronic debility, although it doewnot kill with the swiftness of yellow fever, is as sure to sap the springs of life eventually as any acute dis- ease, if not checked by invigorating medication. There is something inexpressibly touching in the spectacle of premature decay. Languor, pallor, emaciation, depression of spirit, and a diataste for exertion, are its ordiuary symptoms, and they should be promptly met by tonic treatment. The best in- vigorant and exhilarant that can be administered in acase of this kind is Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. ‘The stimulating principle of the preparation rouses the dornant energies of the system, and the strength- ening and regulating properties give a permanent and healthful impulse to the vital forces thus brought into play. The failing appetite is re- awakened, the process of digestiun and assimilation are quickened, the quality of the Llood is improved, the secretions become more natural. and evéry organ that contributes to the nourishment of the body an- dergoes salutary change. By these means the repair of the physical structure is effected and ite health and vigor restored. Inno class of diseases has th: beneficent operation of the Bitters been more marked and striking than in these characterized by general debility and nervous prostration. Ladies affected with these ailments find in this most wholesome of all tonics and correctives the safest and surest means of relief. It is strong to restore and powerless to ‘ieee.
