The Dake is the y it son of the former King, Louis pe. of France, and has since thedepost: @ueen Isabella been @ prominent candi- date for the vacant rone on account of his connection with the royal family, he having married the Infante Louisa, sister 6 Ina. bella. Prince Henri was the brother of Queen Isabella’s husband, King Francisco de As: | has always been a bitter opponent of his cousin | Montpensier’s pretensions. Shortly after the fight of Isabella ‘he addressed a | letter to the Cortes violently denouncing Montpensier, claiming that the latter was playing the Revolutionists false, and endeay- coring to dupe them as he had duped the Queen, and that he himself was truly Liberal. Since then a hostile meeting between the two has often been atitict and has now’ oc- curred, with the fatal result already stated. Prince Henri has been in affiliation with the Liberal party in Spain, and his seconds in the duel were Kepublican Deputies of the Cortes. ‘The seconds of the were Gens. Cordova and Alaminor. The principals drew lots for the frst shot, and Prince Henri won the choice. ‘The adversaries exchanged the tirst fire at the distance of ten paces, without result. ‘They then advanced on each other, and, at the dis- tance of seven paces, Prince Henti fired and missed. The Duke returned the fire, shootin, his adversary through the head. The latter tell to tke ground, and ina few moments expired. Montpensier showed the utmost calmness daring the combat, but was much affected when ine formed of the result. As the Prince was poor, the Duke offers to provide for his widow and children. The aflair has created much excites ment. A later account says: The duel between Duke de Montpensier and Prince Henri de Bourbon creates intense excitement. The letters writ. ten by the latter branded Montpensier as a Je- sait conspirator, and called him a bloated Freneh pastry cook. The prince won the choice of weapons and ground, and the right to the first shot. The distance was ten paces, the combat- } Auts firing alternately from revolvers. The first and second shots of the Prince missed, at the third the buliet grazed the cheek of the Dake, causing a slight wound. Montpensier’s tirst | shot missed, the second slightly wounded the Prince, and the third proved fatal, the ball en- tering the forehead of the Prince, and killin hm instantly. | The Duke exclaimed, ““My God, what have | done’ nd swore to protect ‘the Frince’s children. Montpensier and his seconds are in Madrid, and have not been arrested. | When the Duke had fired twice his seconds en- | deavored to effect a reconciliation, but the Prince was furious, and refased. ‘It is ru- mored French intrigue 1s at the bottom of the duel.
