The next levee of President Grant will be given on Thursday, the 24th inst., between the hours of 8 and 10 p. m. Mrs. Grant's receptions will be held every ‘Tuesday during the season, between the hours of 2and 4p. m. Secretary and Mrs. Belknap have issued cards for receptions for February 19th and 26th, at 9 P-m. No.3 Madison Place. ‘The receptions of the Speaker of the House of Representatives will be at his residence, 403 Fifteenth street, from 9 to 11 o’clock on each Friday evening of the season. And the argu- ment is especially inapplicable to female clerks, for the reason that the openings for employ- ment for women are so few that they are nearly always underpaid. It does not follow that be- cause in consequence of this competition the poor needlewomen of New York are paid but a dime for making ashirt that they are overpaid. We should judge that Gen. Herr H. Heath, formerly of this city, lately appointed Marshal ot New Mexico, is in hot water in that Territory, from the manner in which the appointment is discussed by the Santa Fe Post. That paper overhauls Heath's antecedents, military and civil, and brings eut the famous letter written by Heath April 9, 1861, to H.
