When confined in her cell she became more com- mumicative, and asserted that the murdered man, had Killed himself. hatterty, however, ined to answer nny interrogatories, an: became stolid in her demeanor. ‘THE SCENE OF THE MURDER. ‘The room in which the murder was committed is in a frame and is about tenor twelve feet square. It cont a bed, a bureau, anda few , and on bureau a dim it was burning this morning. Immediately after the fact of the murder became known a large crowd gathered around the building, and remained ‘ont of it during the night and morning. THE WEAPON AND THE WOUND. ‘The knite with which the fatal wound was in- flicted was taken to the station, and is an ordi- SS knife, with a blade about five inel Jong, and it is ground down to a point. The wound in the breast of the deceased (who Was laid on the bed after the homicide) is a very small one, not over half an inch wide. Itisjust below the left nipple, and the blade of the knife is supposed, from the man havi cately, to have taken a downward course and entered the heart. Officers Smoot and Parlin were on the ground & few minutes after the event occurred, and Parlin found the knife sticking in the wound and. drew, it out. Dr. W. E. Poulton was called upon and arrived just w minutes before Mouton died. The knife was Yound by him lying on the low, and showed marks of blood about two inches from the point. ‘THE INQUEST. Officer Skinner was in charge of the premises this morning, the keys of which he kept, and the door was not opened until the arrival of Dr. W. W. Potter. the Coroner, who, with Drs. S. J Todd and 8. F- Hartigan, arrived at 10°; a. m and proceeded to hold a post mortem exumui tiom. It was found that the vest, outer shirt and under shirt of deceased had been pierced with the knife. After removing the clotiin, and opening the chest of deceased, it was foun the knife had penetrated through ‘the body and entered the heart at t! ipex, opening the left Reutricle, from which large quantities of blood escaped into the thoracic cavity, causing almost instant death. ‘The examination revealed the further fact that all partsof the body were in a perfectly healthy state. At the conclusion of the post mortem examination a jury was empanneled by the Coroner, as follows: Win. P. Hicks, Terrence McCaffery, Thomas J. Finlay, James Williams, Wm. A. After the jury had been sworn, the Coroner stated that, the place being uncomfortable, he would-take the evidence at the station huasc.
