She received com- munion from him. Over three hu of the fathers refused to sign the petition in favor of infallibility, and many others returned evasive answers. The opposers of the project intend getting up a counter-petition, and assert that they are sure or adhesions enough to defeat the infallibility. Loxvox, Jan. 17—The Tablet, a Catholic or- gan, says: The majority in the Ecumenical Council in faver of the proposition of infalli- bility will be enormous. At one o’clock the unfinished. business being the bill for the admission of Virginia, was taken up. Mr. Stewart desired that the House bili should be taken up and put on its passage. Mr. Summer refused to allow the Honse bill to be rcad more than once, and Mr. Conkling sug- gested that the House bill could be offered ai the proper time as a substitute. Mr. Morrill of Vermont, declared that Vir ginia was not fit to be admitted, and he was op- posed to her coi in, cither with or withoat conditions. He would, however, sooner trust the rebels of the South than the Democratic parts of the North. He insisted that Governor Wal ker was not a fit representative of the loyal men, Virginia had shown in voting down the clauses of her constitution that she would trample on the fourteenth amendment whenever she had the power.
