Notice to Advertisers. As Tue Staz will not be published on Satur- day, and as we shall print an unusually large edition to-morrow, those of our business people who desire to attract the attention of the public Guring the balance of the week sheuld send in their advertisements as early as possible to- Merrow morning. ——_-<ee--_____. The International Exhibition. While some members of Congress, and some New York papers, seem to think that Washing- ton is not the proper place to held the proposed World's Fair, the Governors of the States, and the manufacturers and producers, both here and abroad, who are most directly interested in the practical success of the undertaking, do not sppear to share the fears entertained in these political quarters. Replies to the circulars of the Committee on Home Correspondence continue to come in from every quarter, and speak in a tone of encour- agement which surpasses all our expectations. We expected opposition and objection, and un- friendly criticism from many quarters. But, outside of Congress and some of the New York Papers, we meet with nothing but sympathy and support. Governor Baker, of Indiana, writes to Judge Edmunds, the Chairman of the Committee on ‘Home Correspondence, as follows:—“I have Just received your communication of the 14th by your committee relating to the proposed ~‘International Industrial Exhibition” to be held imshe city of Washington in 1871. I take pleasure in saying that I feel it to be highly important that the proposition to hold such an exhibition should be successfully carried into execution, and that I feel confident that it will receive the approval and encouragement of the people of this State. I shall hold myself in readiness to give the matter such aid as it may be in my power properly to render.” Governor Fairchild, ot Wisconsin, writes as follows :—*I will do all that I can to aid in making the Industrial Exhibition a success, and will, when the proper time arrives, make every proper exertion to have this State properly rep- resented. I have just now nosuggestion to make, but will hold myself ready to co-operate with those having immediate controlJ of the enter- prise.” Hon. Marshall P. Wilder, of Boston, writes: “‘Ieommend most heartily your enterprise in regard to the International Exhibition, and shall be most happy to aid with such por dlc as I may possess. I hope to be in Washington soon, and will do myself the honor of calling on your Board, and will then exchange opinions as to the best methods for msuring success for the Exhibition and honor to the country. While in mind, permit me to suggest that the pomologi- eal department will be of especial interest. As one of the commissioners to the Universal Ex- hibition in Paris in 1867, 1 had opportunities to witness the grand demonstration in this line; and when we take into consideration the great extent of our country, with a soil and climate capable of producing almost all the fruits of the habitable globe, I doubt not that we, in the United States, can rival that display in quantity and excellence.” Letters, full of encouragement and making admirable practical suggestions, are constantly received by the committee. We believe that if we can get a proper charter from Congress, and proper recognition and aid trom Government, we can make this exhibition ® complete success. The fact that it is te be held, when once definitely settled, will give an immense impulse to the business of this city. ‘The preparation ef the grounds and the erce- tion of the buildings will give employment to thousands of skilled mechanics, artists, artizans and laborers. The city will naturally endeavor to prepare suitably for the great event. Street Failroads will be extended; railroad commauni- cation will be increased; our river approaches will be improved; the means of local transporta- tion of goods will be greatly enlarged; the sup- ply of water must be made adequate; new places of amusement, new hotels and boarding-houses Will be erected; and everything will be done by the Corporation and the peopie to make our city an agreeable place of sojourn for the crowds of visitors who will flock to it. The tax-payer must be blind indeed who can see nothing in this for the benefi( of the entire community, and worthy of the etlort of all. Every Individual member Of society has a direct personal interest in the prosperity, succest an improvement of the community in which be lives. ———— We are able at last to say a good word for the Ealtimore and Ohio Railroad Company. It scems that they mean not only to resist the fur- ther payment to the State of Maryland of the tax wgom passengers over the Washington branch, but they also announce that they will reduce the fair one-fifth when the State formally abandons this claim. But we do notsee why they need wait for this action by the State. They ad- mit they have no legal power to apply any portion receipts of the road to the payment of tax, now that the Supreme Court of the United States has decided that a State has no utional right to levy such tax upon pas- sengers through it. By continuing to collect this tax the company are confessedly acting Without authority of law. Let them at once deelme to collect it as well as to pay it over to the State, and thereby do away with a great cause of complaint against thetr read. -2ee- For our Congressional rulers to refuse to pro- vide more railway facilities for the National Capital, and then oppose the holding of an International Industrial Exhibition at that point Decause it has oniy one line of railroad, as some of them did yesterday, is very mach like knock. ing @ poor fellow down and kicking him soundly for falling.
