i i ! ! EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY moxpaY. - Movember flaca nese. Reading Matter on Every Page. International Exhibitions Why Ours Must Succeed. An important element that should not beorer- Jooked in estimating the chances for the success ©f the proposed International Exposition is the fact that such exhibitions are now sure to take Place at short intervals in different parts of the globe, and the one proposed in Washington in 1871 will occur at about the proper time to make it the world’s exhibition for the period, of the progress of human invention and genius, ‘The eager competition amongst the inventors and manufacturers of the old world makes it certain that they will promptly embrace the op- Portunity to introduce thcir latest achievements and productions to the eyes of the American People; and our producers, manufacturers, inventors, and srtists must be perforce on hand to contest the ground with their foreign rivals Yor the American market. This wholesome emulation must result in bringing to Washing- ton & very complete exhibit of the industrial progress of the world. in this connection. as showing the regular growth of the exhibition system to its present Permanence and importance, a sketch of the history of such affairs will be of interest. The Origin of these periodical collections of the works of human genius, which are termed exhi- bitions, is to be traced to the annual displays of new inventions which were first devised by the British Society of Arts and Manufactures, in 1751, and continued for a whole century till the year 1860. This society also originated the idea of an International Exhibition, which was successfully carried out in 1851. It should be observed, however, that the annual exhibitions of the Society of Arts were always of 4 semi-private character, being only accessible to its members and their friends, and that to France is to be ascribed the merit of having held in 1798 the first public Exhibition. In this first exhibition the exhibitors amounted only to one hundred and ten, while sixty years later their number was increased to forty-two thous- and, and might have been doubled had space been granted to all who applied for it. From 198 the exhibitions succeeded each Other at irregplar intervals, as follows:—In 1798, 1901-2-6- 19-23-27 4-39-44 and 49, when they took the shape and name of International Exhi- bitions. The first of these was held at Hyde Park, London, in 1851, with 13,937 exhibitors; then followed the Paris exhibition in 135, with 28,954 exhibitors; the South Kensington, London ‘exhibition of 1862 28,653 exhibitors, and the Paris exhibition of 1867, with 42,257 exhibitors. It may be set down now asa fixed fact that the system of international exhibitions is a permanent one; that somewhere in the world the producers will meet every two or three years to compare notes and compete for markets. Washington City w the meeting place for 171, and if our citizens take hold of the enterprise in the right spirit, there is no good reason why the Fally here shall not be as great, and the exhibi- tion as interesting asthe most successful of the exhibitions of the old world. -~<oo- Mrsister Kowero ry Trovupte.—As Mr. Komero, the present Mexican Minister of the ‘Treasury, formerly represented his Government in this country, the charges filed against him in Congress on the 2ist ult. will not be without interest to Washington readers. They were pre- ferred by Deputy Joaquin Alealde, and are con- tained under the following heads : 1, Ineligibility of Don Matias Pew gs to dis- charge the duties of Secretary of the Treasury. ismanagement of the public funds. Fa Connivance with the favorites in order to purchase at ruinous rates the funds of the ser- — (soldiers) of the nation. 4. Never investigating the charges made Against the administration of the custom-house at Vera Cruz, contenting himself solely with the excuses of said officer, m he has believed on his wcord of honor. In regard to the charges, the Siglo, a promi- nent paper of Mexico, says: “Each and all of those aceusations are vet grave, and we cannot conceive why the Pres nt of the Republic can conserve such a Min- ister, nor why the Con of the Union has not placed Don Matias Romero at the disposi- tion of the grand jury, in order to form process *eeThese things are as scandalous as the con- Guet of the Minister himself, who has not even taken the trouble to vindicate himself, confessing New Books. sige J. Her efforts in this peculiar style of entertainment have proved a great fea- ture this season in New York city, where this t d lady and the New York Philharmonic Society have given six performances to crowded houses, and been warmly praised for the excel- lence of the reading and music. The Washing- ton public will no doubt avail themselves of this ©ceasion (the only opportunity she can be per- mitted by her numerous engagements to offer us) of enjoying such a novel and pleasing enter- tainment.
