NOVEMBER 27, 1869. - 7 in Cincinnati, just now, He opened in “The Gentleman trom Ireiand.” —Chicago is still well off for amusements, the week her theatre goers have been able to choose betweep Joe Jefferson, Theodore ‘Thomas’ Grand C Concert Organization, the Thompeon Troupe, Emerson & Manning's Min- strels, and the Davenport Brothers. Jeffer-' ‘son,—who, by the way, is said to have purchased a residence on Michigan avenue, in that city— was down fora benetit last 3, On which oc- casion his son, Master C. Bs. Jefferson, was to make his first appearance. — Mr. and Mrs. Barney Williams are starring’ Steed that Grease have been made to drive all at De Bar’s Opera House, and Frank Mayo at the Olympic theatre, St. Lonis. The Parepa Rosa troupe will open there next week. — Yhe marriage of George Butler and Rose Eytinge is insisted upon by the New York Sun, which paper publishes what purports to be the official documents in the case: — Kate Denin fs playing at the Salt Lake City Theatres She opened in “Who Killed Cock Robin” and the “Belle of the Fanbourg.” — Emma Webb, one of the well known Webb sisters, was privately married to a Frenchman named Navarre, not long agu. She sailed tor California last week. — The Gothamites, who have been restive and unhappy ever since the Peace Jubilee in Boston, are at last going to get even with the Hub. ‘The opportunity is presented by the hun- dredth anniversary of the birth-day of Beet- hovan, which occurs next year; and the proposi- tion is to erect a monster building in Central Park, where the demonstration Is to be made. If being extensively oficered is worth anything, the project can hardly fail to be a success, — The Parepa troupe, now in Louisville, gave three weeks of English Opera in Chicago. The receipts for the first week were $13,000; second week, $12,000; third week, $11,000. Total $36,000. “Martha” was the favorite opera, “The Bohemian Girl” coming next. The company will sing again in Chicago during the holidays. — The New Yorkers are moving to establish what they call a Metropolitan Art Museum, which is, intended, we take it, to be to that. city what the Corcoran Gallery is to be to Washing- ton and the whole country. Mr. Bryant presided at the meeting held tat Tuesday‘evening to ad- vance the project, and addresses were delivered by Professor Comfort, of Princeton College; Rev. Drs. Bellows and Thompson, Mr. Wight, Architect of the Academy of Design, andothers. Resolutions to carry the project into effect were unanimously adopted, and a committee of fifty was appointed to perfect the scheme, which will probably be made a success, although we obeerve that the organization fails to satisfy a good many of the artists, who hold that money and purchasing power are represented.in it at the expense of brains and knowledge of art, and that art and artists proper are not sufficiently recog- nized. — Barlow has recently added to his large col- lection some very tine specimens, by old and modern masters. am — The portrait of Gem. Lee, by Buchser, now on exhibition at Smith & Strong’s, can hardly satisfy the friends of the great leader of the lost cause. We have never seen him, but if he is cor- rectly interpreted here, he falls very far below utr previous conceptions of his character. — A fportrait of the Abbe Liszt, painted for Mr. Longtellow, by Healy, is attracting a good deal of attention in Boston. The pose and method of the picture is as original as it is strik- ing. it represents the venerable Abbe as he ‘cae out to meet ‘thé painter, on an evening call—his thin form in deep shadow, one hand holding alofta flaring candle, which sheds a bright light upon his features. The idea isextremely effective, and seems to bring out the spirituality of the old musician's tage as no ordinary portrait could do it. +20e- MIXED SCHOOLS. “ Whe is Rev.
