EVENING STAR. | S7 BEADING MATTER-ON BEVERY PAGE. 6 OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. | S7THE EVENING STAR is farnisbed to newsboys at a price which enables them to sell | it om the street for THREE CENTS a copy at S reasonable profit. The public are requested, | therefore, to pay only that amount for it. Price at the counter, TWO CENTS. Delivered by carriers, anywhere ia tha city or Georgetown, at TEN CENTS a week. | —_—_—_—_—SSSSSSSSSSS==—=— RAILROAD MATTERS. We stated a few days ago that the corpors- tors of the Alexandris Canal, Railroad aod Bridge Company had elected Berkley Ward, Esq., chief engineer of the proposed railroad from Georgetown to Alexandria, and that they bad already contracted for ties and tron for the Work. ‘The committee for the constraction of | the road are Messrs. H. S. McUomb, Phillip Quigley and Jonn L. King, and it is stated that | the company expect that by mid-winter the | connection will be mad between this Di-t-ict sed the railways ramuing South and West from Alexandria. With this road and the | Union Junction, Metropolitan, and Baltimore and Potomac roads completed, and the Loudon and Hampshire road extended to the Ohio river, © great impetus must be given to the growth and prosperity of Washington. The Loudoun and Hampshire Road will be tapped by the new Alexandria and Georgetowa Road at Four-mile Ran. This ts not the most desirable connection we could have with that road, yet the saving of time on account of its easy grades will about compensate for the ad- ditional mile or two ot distance. The Loudoun and Hampshire Railroad is now constructed | and worked to Hamilton, about four miies west | of Leesburg, and the President and Directors &re in fine spirits, and propose to place uader contract this fall the extension frem Hamilton to the eastern base of the mountain near Saick_ | ersville. If found expedient a temporary | track cam be built across the gsp at @ very Moderate gradient. The bridge across the She- mandosh will then be the only work of magni« tude east of the South Branch mountain. There are row two surveying parties in tne field be, tween the Suenandoah and Ohio rivers, and the Winchester News says. “With the progress of exact survey the pros- Pect improves of @ route between Washington nnatt which will place this work beyond competition on the part of the roads north of it. It is now anticipated that the whole distance to the Ubio river cau be cat down to three bundre¢ and thirty miles, reach- ing that stream at a point considerably west of Parkersburg and thus shorteaing the distance through Obio. A link of ten miles, it is said, will complete a through line in that State.”* ‘We need only add that the persons who are connected with the enterprize are geatlemen with ample means, and no lack of energy, and that they expect that the year 1971 will see the road cempleted to the coal fields in Western Virgizis. One of the most conspicuous examples of the inconsistency of the better class of American | cittzens we have yet seem is furnished by the | case of Mr. George William Curtis, lately | nominated for the office of Secretary of State | by the Republican Convention of New York. | Probably no man in the country has inveighed | more frequently er more forcibly against the folly and wickedness of elevating incompetent or bad men to office than Mr. Curtis; yet ne is | nO sooner selected for a public position for which be is preeminently fit—and which, it may be added, should not be considered by bim as beneath bis just aspirations in the quali- | ties of responsibility and dignity—than he | basters into print to say that “it is impossible for me (him) toaccept the nomination.” It is quite likely that Mr. Cartis could have | filled the office in question only at some incon- yeuience and probsbiy at some pecuniary sacrifice to Bimself. But is that the only point to beconsidered? Should not the duty whic the good citizen owes to the community at large also be taken into account! Is it to be forever the mission of that class always to preach and never to practice! Ifso, we may as well shu our eyes, fold our bands, and tamely submit to the reign of incompetents and thieves, Unless gentlemen of character and responsibility are willing to sbare between them the annoyances and sacrifices of a’tending primary elections | snd boiding comparatively insignificant offices, | they must pot ap with the evils brought upon | us by rulers who are not so squeamish, and | who have little or nothing at stake. This les- sen, of all others, the American people have need to learn. If they heed it, complaints of correption m office, increased taxation, and conse queut depreciation of property, willsoon be beard. If they d> not, they will yy continue to suffer until they nave no alternative but to choose between absolute ruin snd the sharp remedy afforded by a vigilance commitice A. T.
