SEB OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. THE TOBER ELECTIONS, The State elections in Pennsylvania and (bio take piace on Tuesday, October 12. In each State a Governor is to be chosen. Pennsylvania Jobn W. Geary, the present in- umbent, is a candidate for re-election, bis ompetitor being Asa Packer, the Democratic candidate. The vote will probably be light as compared with that of Iast year, at which time | tue State polled a larger vots than ever before. Governor Geary was elected in 186 by 4 ma. jority of 17,178, in @ total vote of 597,370. Im I-07, at an election for Justice of the Saprems ‘ourt, the total vote was 53) and the ma- jority for the Democratic candidate ¥27. At he election for Auditor-Geueral, last October, the total vote reached the unprecadentedly Ligh figure of 655,155, amd the Repubdlicaa Three weeks later, at thi on. there were polled 6: Votes, out of which Grakt recetyed a majority Of So, It will thus be seen that the Democracy will have to overcome an average Kepublican majority of 13,74 at the Iast four elections, In Obio, George H. Pendleton, is the Demo. cratic candidate for governor, in opposition to | Governor Hays, the present incumbent. The Tain interest in the contest in Obio. is from the act that Mr. Pendleton is regarded as the originator and special advocate of paying the national debt in zreenbacks, and, inasmach as he bas revived this issue quite recently, bis election will be claimed as the indorsement by bis own seo Governor Hays was elected by a small | eajority of ¢*~), ims total vote of 41,227. Last | 2all, at the State election, 516,; Polled, of whieh the Key © obtained a majority of » | d three weeks later Grant carried the State by 40.617 majori'y, the total yote of the State being 519, sparing the votes at these several elections, it is ascertained that the average Republican majority was 2,324, which Mr. Pendleton has to overcome to be the next Governor of Ohio. The result of the fall elections thus far do not judieate a suiticient Republican loss to give the Demecrats great encouragement in the October elections. ee The strict construction of the law as to the liability of dealers in produce to payment of the special tax as produce brokers by Acting Commissioner Douglass, whose decision on | shat point was referred to in our local columns yesterday, will inevitably drive many of th® snail dealers from our markets, and thus raise | the price of garden products, &c..—already too | high—by lessening competition. If the law. as | construed by the Acting Commissioner of In- ternal Revenue, ts strictly enforced, the poor | market women who bring a little butter. a few: ©eRs, oF & Basket of vegetables, produced on a beigbbor’s farm, to market, or a box of berries picked m the fields and return home with + their Little package of eroceries or dry goods, will haveto go without many necessaries they | Procure from the proceds of this small way of trading unless they are abie to take out licenses “produce brokers.
