The wound directly over the eyes was apparently made with the blade of a hatchet. © Was speechless when found and continund until her death, which occurred at fifteen minutes past 11 0 clock, Nicholas at first denied that he had struck his | wife or her taother, but subsequent!y admitted he did it, that they had had a little fight. so stated that the weapons he used were | a knite, hatchet and brick. Subsequently, at the station, ne said that he had done the deed because last night the mother had advised her daughter not to sleep ‘with him, becanse he was drunk; that he went to the room this morning, and the mother ore | dered him out, at the same time picking up a hatohet; that he seized the hatchet, wrested it from her, and knocked his wife down and then his mother-in-law, and beat her with the hatchet until he broke the handle, and then | used a brick; and that he did not use the kuite | at all. He appears to be very cool about the matter, and converses yery freely. From statements made by the neighbors, it appears that last night he threatened to kill bis wife, and that she was about to jamp out of the window, and that it was in consequence of these threats that the two women refused to allow him to stay in the same room with them. The affair created intense excitement in the neighborhood where it occurred, especially s among the colored people, and, as the news spread, a very large Lumber gathered about the bouee, all anxious to see the victims and to learn the particulars, and among these were several relatives of tne deceased. Nicholas and his | Victims were originally from North Carolina, | and have been lying in this city several years. The two women have borne excellent charac. ters since they have been here, and before, as far Hatton insisted that his motion was in order, ; 281s known. The Charges Against Mayor Bowen. THE INVRSTIGATING COMMITTER—REPORTs As TO THE RVIDENOE BEFORE THEN. The special committee of the Uity Councils to which was referred the charges of Mr. J. H. Crane against Mayor Bowen is steadily pursu- ing its investigations. The committee deliber- ates with closed doors, but @ portion of the tes- timony, given om Tuesday evening, has leaked out it seems, and the following is said to be Purport of it: M of the work on of K street was placed in G and ist streets. He corroborated the statement of Mr. Crane with Teference to the quantity of dirt taken out of K street and put in said G and Ist streets. He testified tha: he had not been paid by Messrs. U'Beirne and Gleason, contractors for said Work, since the Ist of July Jast, and there is still Owing to him about $40. The first time he contractors paid their hands off, the pay~ ounted to about $1.71), and they re- dat that th bout $2,700 from the Mayor, out of which sam Mr. John B. Fr; received 3450, Witne: ce. Wit ness said he considered the work not done in & workmanlike manmer, as the contract re- depth of gravel being deficient, and that this matter was talked over with Mr. Gleason at tne lime the work was being done. The next witness was Mr. John F. Qook. City Register, who stated that for =6,000 of the amount paid sud contractors no vouchers appear in the Register’s office. That the law requires all moneys shall be rant, signed py the Mayor and countersigued by the Register. Witness did not know of $5,000 being paid to the contractors about the last of July, but if paid it was done without his signature and in Violation of law. Wm. 8. Huntington, casbier of the First National Bank, was next examined, who stated that on or about the 23d of July ne received an order from the Mayer for $3,000, on account of an estimate made by the City Surveyor, for 212,000 for work done on K and (; streets north and First street, said 33,4 to be deducted from. the first taxes paid in this year. Toe Mayor, io the above order, showed that $3,745 had pre- viously been paid on account of the above con- tract, and that the 3.000 was receipted for by Messrs. U’Beirne, Fry and Gleason, on the back of the estimate, The next witness was Charles H. Bliss, former Vity Surveyor, who testified that there ‘Was no surplus earth on K street at thetime | the work was measured; that the embiukment | and excavation nearly balanced each other. It is snid that he and Mr. Crane had a sharp con. | troversy in the presence of the commities. | Mr. Jonn B. Fry was next calied to the stand, who testified that he had an equal inter- est in the contract with Messrs. O’Beirne and Gleason; that he understood the contract pre- ciwely as Mr.Crane understood it; that he did ‘ot understand it so at first, as he had Rot seen it until the morning of ‘the 2th of April, when he met Mr. Crane, with Golonel O’Beirne, in the Mayor's office, where a lengty conversauon took place regarding the terms of the contract.
