Economy IN THE Post Urrice Derarr- MEBT.—It will be remembered that at the last session of the Fortieth Uongress, Postmaster General Randall reported an e:timated defi- ciency in the appropriations for the Post Office Department for the fiscal year ending June %0, 1862, of $3,700,000. Donegan, makes several suggestions which are worthy of due consideration by our City Fathers, He says that all the streams of water which flow mito the city from the hills north of us can be intercepted and carried through calverts tothe Eastern Branch and Rock Creek, which would Tequire no deeper cutting below the established grades than is required for an ordinary sewer. The waters of the streams west of 14th street flowing into the city cam be comveyed into Rock Creek, and those east to the Eastern Branch, and by this means the expense of keeping in repair numerous bridges and arch img the water courses would be saved, aud much land which is now useless weald be re- claimed. It would tiso affect the plans mitted for the improvement of the canal, much as the Tiber would be one o! the streams cut off, and it would render the work of arch- ing that stream from Pa. avenue to Indiana avenue unnecessary. By throwing the waier into Roek Creek and the Eastern Branch their volume will be increased, and the navigation of those streams imprdved. WHISKY AWD TOBACCO FRavps.—The list of seizures” reported at the Interval Revenue Bureau yesterday includes the names of one hundred and twenty Arms, and, as usual, most of them were engagea ia the whisky or to- bacco business. For the benefitof the Governmen’, and for the purpose of securing the greatest amount of revenae tothe Treasury, it is not improbable that in many cases the proffered compromises will be accepted.
