AUGUST 25, 1869, S7-REAPING MATTER ON EVERY PAGS. SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TRLB- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. ———————— For 7s AcCcoMMODATION Or Psnsons leaving the city during the summer months they can Dave Tam Stam mailed to their Address, by ordering the same at the office, for 2% cents per week, for one week or more. ‘The Massachusetts Democratic State Uonven- thon at Worcester yesterday nominated for Gov. ernor, Hon. John Quincy Adams, son of Caarles Francis Adams, ex-Minister to England. Resolutions were adopted denounc. 4ng the prohibitory law, condemning tae Leg- islature for mot granting charters to certain Isbor organizations, calling for economy in the Public expenditures, recognizing the duty of acquiescing im results already arrived at in national sffairs, expressing confidence im the ultimate success of the party, &c. Colone} Adams, in accepting the nomination, made a speech, criticizing the tariff system, and en- deavored to support his argument in tavor of free trade by quotations from Commissioner ‘Wells’ report. In speaking of the prohibition law, be recommended that an invitation be ex- tended to Republicans to join the Democrats and defeat the law. ‘That Mr. Claflin will be re-elected no one conversant with Massachusetts politics doubts, bat the Democrats will try to elect license law or “free rum” men to the Legisiature. The city of Boston, and perhaps two or three others, may elect Democratic representatives upon {bis iasue, but the country towns, it 1s thought, wil counter and overbalance the combined torce of the cities, and thus secure a Republi. cB majority in both Senate and House next year. ————____ Lasor amp Wacms.—One of the most prac- tical and sensible acts of the recant Labor Uon- gTess was the adoption of a resolation which Provides that the local trade organizitions shall furnish quarterly reports to the President of the National Union, covering the following Points: « Number of members: usual hours of labor; average amount of wages; cost of living; ‘As to steady work; number out of emplsyment during the past three months; are those who have steady work fully employed ?-as to a rise or fall of wages during the last five years; how many prevented from work by sickness, and Bow many have died during the quarter; and as to the result of co-operative production, if tried.” The value of full and reliable statis- tics on all these matters of detail, drawn from all parts of the country, and relating to all its istries, cannet be overestimated, and if ac- ton is taken, during the year, by the various trade societies throughout the count ry for far- nishing the statistics required, we shall have better means than we have heretofore for the settlement of certain questions of labor and wages ——— SALT WSLLs tv MicHIGa®N AND OxTARIO.— In boring for oil in Michigan some of the oper- Ators bave struck brine instead of petreleum, And one of the results is the establishment of | Mise were recei Suew and profitable business in that State They re now sinking salt wells at various places. At Alpens, after drilling to the depth of 1,110 feet they reached the great salt basin that seems to underlie the whole of the lower peninsula ot Michigan, and at the depth of 1,125 feet, (the depth they Raye now reached,) the brine is eighty per cent., and continues to sTow stronger as they advance. At the depth of feet a fountain of beautiful mineral wa- wer, equal in some respects to the Saratoga wa- ters, was opened, which continues te flow over the top of the well at a powerful rate. ‘The salt produced from the brine is very white and pure, and evidently quite free from all impurities. Four more wells will be started this fall sud winter. Saltis also being manu. tactured to some extent at Goderich, Untario. Here too the discovery of brine was accidental, | Sept. 15th and 16th, for the purpose of organ, and was made while boring for oil. The wells, ‘which are eight in number, average from 1,000 to 1,117 feet deep, penetrating 15 feet in the rock salt, The brine is perfectly clear and color- | Jess, and no trace of peroxide of iron is found. ‘The plan of tbe British Government for buy- ng up the telegraph lines of tne United King- dom, now before Parliament, seems to meet | ‘with public favor. The Government proposes to give to the companies £5,715,047 for their Property. In addition to this payment there “re other payments which it 1s necessary to marke to the railway companies and to ether Parties, the general result of which is that the ‘Whole payment to be made by the Government Amounts to the sum of £6,750,000. The gross yearly Sir, and the expenditure at £159,418, which Ivaves a net profit of £314.354. Deducting four per cent. interest for the sum necessary to pur- chase, there will remain a profit of at least £4,900 8 year, and if the money be obtained At 3 per cent, £77,000. As the income is in- creasing at the rate of 1S to 32 per cent. per annum, the profits of the Government will be- come still larger than this. Itis believed that the rates may be considerably reduced and a profit still derived by the Government, as bas been the case with the Post Oifice Department | under the cheap postage rates.
