No appointment to fill the va- cancy Das yet been made, but Mr. H.S. Van- derbilt, who is now acting, will probably be promoted to Chief of the Bareau. Drs1RUCTION OF MUTILATED CURRENCY.— Workmen have just snceveded in removing a huge engine from the cellar of the Treasury building, (wes: front.) which was used mainly in furnishing power for ranning the paper mills. Tue TAx ON BEOKELS.—A committee of the New York Suck Exchange, consisting of Messrs. Hoyt, Sleane, Greenleaf, and Vao Schaib, with their Actuary, A. N. Lowis, waited on Commissioner Delano this morning to request bim to reconsider his recent decision classifying them as bankers and requiring them to pay thattax. They represent the decision as taxing money borrowed by brokers for the use of their customers as capital. The Com. missioner refuses to reopen the quesion, having given it full consideration already, ‘This decision will have the effect of bringing into the Treasury an additional $100,000 per ‘week from this class of bnsiness men. THE CURRENCY PRINTING.—It is thought that Secretary Boutwell will soon inaugurate measures to resume the printing of the national currency in the Treasury Department, and take the work away trom the New York Bank Note Companies, who have vitisted their con- tract by the delay in furnishing the supply, the Principal cause of WBich breach of faith, it is stated, 1s, that the companies are executing 3 large contract for a foreign house, compelling the United States to wait their pleasure. Mr. MoUartee, Superintendent of the Barean of Engraving and Printing, is ready to put tha ecals om the notes, bat om account of not receiving any his presses are idle. There is po doubt the work can be exe- cuted with greater facility here, at a less cost and less risk of counterfeiting and fraud, ‘When it is taken into consideration that the paper is now prepared in one establishment, the engraving and printing of backs of notes in another; the engraving and printing of the faces of the same im still another place ; the putting On of the seals and putting ap in pack- ages in yet another place, besides the packing and unpecking and traasportations from point to point, ft will be seen why the risk is less here. (ne object m having this work done im separate Offices, it is said, is to prevent plates, paper, &c., from falling into the hands of counterfelters, It is the neeietee. ofmany it gentlemen connected with pie Gartner rm however, tha! this could be prevented mach more effectually by having but one oifice instead of a mambé2r, as atpresent. Itis true that quire a terge ex- perditure will be necessary to furnish suitable presees, dc., in place of those recently sold at the Treasury, though there ts enough m1- chinery in the Department to print safficteat to meet the moderate demand, and it would be bata short time before all necessary machinery could be in place, if the change is made.
