CIATION. As the time for reopening the various insti. tutions of learning throughout the country is Tapidly approsching, 9 brief reference to the labors of the Inte Philological Convention at Poughkeepsie may be of interest, as some cational reforms were suggested by that in: ential and learned body. which should be uni- Versally adopted, dating from the beginning of the scholastic year. This cor ‘on, the first ever held in the United States, was presided over by Professor Whitney, the ablest living Philologist in Americs. The first paper read was by Professor Henry, of the Smithsonian Institute. It was an account of what that in. stitution has done for the promotion of philo. jogical literature. President Samson, ot Uo- lumbian College, happily characterized this paper as an olive branch from Natural Science to Language. A permanent national society, called the American Philological Association, Was fermed, startiag at the outset with over one hundred members, and the following officers for the present year:—Prof. W. D Whitney, President of Yale College, Presi- dent; Prof. A. Harkness, of Brown University. and Br. Dwight, of Clinton, N.Y, Vice Presi: dents: Prof. G. F. Comfort. of Allegheny Qol- lege, Secretary; H. J. Hammond Trambali, of The Executeve Committee consists of the above officers, with the addition of Prof. Schele De Vere, of tne University of \irginia; Prof. J. R. Boyce, of Chicago University; CJ. Buckingham, Esq., of Poughkeepsie, N.Y; Rev. Howard Crosby, ot New York city; and Dr. O. H. Taylor, of Andover, Mass. Teachers and profes. sors of the classical languages will be in- terested with the course taken by the Asso- ciation to assist in attaining uniformity in the promunciation of the classical lancuages, A committee of five of the bast classical schol- ars, and of the most experienced instructors in the country, cousisting of Professor Hadley, of Yale College; Dr. Taylor, of Andover, Dr. Ar- nold, of Madison University; Dr. Dwight, of Clinton; and Professor Fenling of the Univer- sity of Wisconsin, were appointed, and pre. sented 8 report, which was unanimously adopt. ed, suggesting that the written accent be ob- served in pronouncing Greex, and that the so- called “continental system” be adopted in pro nouncing the vowels of the Greek and Latin. if this recommendation be adopted by the teachers im the academies from this fall on- ‘ward, it will be but a few years bstore the pres. ent chaotic condition of the pronunciation of the cinssical Ianguaces in America will be re- moved, and uniformity will be established, A plan was tnsugarated for recording the Ladian Janguages before they peris or undergo more change, and the future work of the association is designated as to consist partiy in promoting original linguistic investigation, especially in the Indiau janguages, and partly in the dis- cussion of the pedagegicai questions that are now betore the country, or that may arise in ibe ful a ei THE HOUSE OF LORDS IN DANGER. The pregress of reform im Great Bri- taim—for centuries slow but sure—has been #0 much accelerated during the past few years that it mskes old fogies’ heads whirl, and even astonishes the reformers themselves- ‘Fhe sharp, bitter, aud comparatively short struggle on the trish Church bill, ending ina Gecisive victory for the people, through their Fepresentatives. over the House ot Lords, which practically surrendered its equal legis. lative power, has, instead of satisfying liberal op-nion, led the people to inquire why all the forms of legisistion should be retained bya House which cannot even cisim the power to make them more than forms. The London Daily News, the leading journal of British radicals, goes so far as to say:—“When we ave Bad 8 few more esesions like the Inst ‘WHR & series of euch failures on legislation. and with the continasnce of such a waste of the time and energy of the working bsif of the legislature, the reform of the House of Lords ‘Will become the pressing question of the time. ‘The question must come.
