Great results were expected trom the exten- Siveand complete arrangements made forob- serving the diverse phenomens of :he solar eclipse of August 7th. No detiled official re. Ports of the observations baveso far been made Public, yetenough has transpired to lead to the belief that they were made under favorable circumstances in almost all, if not all, crses, and that the results obtained will add great- Jy to our knowledge of the solar system, and particalarly of the phystcal constitution of the eun. The several parties of observers at D:s Moines, lowa, were very favorably situated, whe was with one of the four parues there, tarnishes to the New York Post s report of — - results obtained. Among the phe. carefully observed were the pacman appearances exterior to the sun, which be- come visible when the disc of tnesun is screened from view by the dark body of the meon. ‘These appearances consist of a luminous hgio surrounding the » called tbe corona, rgse. colored flames or prominences seen within ihe limits of the corona and near the limbof the sun, and luminous streamers radiating in various directions from the some in- stances far beyond the outer limits of the corona. These were observed through tele- scopes, provided with micromatle apparatas, and their positions and extent carefully meas- ured. Other observers were provided with spectroscopes properly adapted to astronomi- cal telescopes, for the purpose of subjecting these luminous masees that extend to vast dis- | Analysis, in the hope of gaining n-w light con- cerning their intimate physical natare and | condition. In co-operation with these spectro- | Scopic observers there was a large number of photographers at various stations, who took photographic impressions of the luminous ap- pesrances referred to during the psriod ot total. ity. The observatious made with the speetro- scope on theeelipse which cecurred in Ladia las, year on August /5, rendered it highly probable that the rose-colored flames were really vast famimg masses of hydrogen gas, extending fitty thousand or sixty thousand miles away from the sun, but that theory, accepted as fact by many scientific men, is disposed of by these observations at Des Moies. Diff-rent spactra were cbiained from the several promiaences, indicative of a variety of chemical constituents n them, °r possibly only the preseaca of dit- ferent constituents im diff-rent parts of the same promivences: and it is proved that thay do not wholly consist of incandescent bydro- | gen, except, perhaps, im their Bigher portions. Professor Rogers confined bis observations ebiefty to the examination of the stracture and the measurement of the altitude of the larze fuminous prominence seen during the who'le of the totality om the lower border of the disc. ‘The obtained result-, botm of a negative and positive cDaracter, with regard to the physical tructure of this conspicuous prominence, be quite at varinace with the precon- ved notions of the natare and condition of the solar protuberances. In fact, the opserva- tions here made om the rosy protuberances, 80 | ar from complet+ly confirming the dedactions | hem obtained im the eclipse of open anew the question of mature and stractare, which Bad beea Gpposed to be almost definitely settled. Ac- cording to the micrometric measurements of | Profeesor Rogers, the altitude of the large | | prominence just referred to, above the sua’s | photoephere, must have exceeded forty thou- | sand miles ‘The prominent feature of the corona, about which there is n> disagreememt among the ob- servers, is that its exterior outline was very | creguiar. There were three directions in | which (he seeming radiations of luminous mat- ser were particularly copious, and extended to distances. These were in the line of the ec Iptic, toward the east, and in the diametri- cally opposite direction, aud nearly ima di- rection perpendicular to the ecliptic toward the north. In the first direction the lines of the streamers could be traced, wit a good opera glass, to 8 distance from the moon's di<c equal © its diameter. This apparent distance an- Wers to am actan! distance of nearly a mil- on of miles. Auother point which seems to be settled is that there are uo planets in our sy: t> the sum than Mercury. Prof. Newcomb, with Bis comet seeker, swept the space imme- d ately surrounding the sun, and within the of Mercury, wish his larg> telescope, without detecting any new planet, or discern- bg any new celestial object or lumiaor pestTance exterior to the corona. ly, the London represen- 2 nd & prominent member of the Operative Masou’s Union, is about to PSy % visit to the Uusied States, under the u-pices of amumber of members of Parlia- | Ment and ocher gentlemen, with the object of | ga tour through the manufacturing dis- S, and sscertaiming from per-onal observa. ud inquiry Smongst the workingmes in | ati trades their ews! political, physical, and S cust Comdité ‘ber Tate of wages and Bours ef labor, and the bearing of the land and emi- | sand movements upon labor rs Dy. London and New York both take up the question when- ever the thermometer gets among the wineties. and there is mucn talk, and more writing, and inpum: rable reminders that clesclipess is next to godliness, and there the matter ends; whil+ along the Sine. aud Rhine sad Msine the seaports of Sweden, Denmark aad Norway swimming baths abound, and men, women and children daily practice what we preach. New York is again feebly discussing the natatorium question, but in London they seem to be mak- ing some progress. A gentl of that city Proposes to establish large inclosed swimming baths in each of the parks of the city, aad also throughout the populoas districts along the in- iand water courses, and to this end he is en- couraged by the iatentioas of the Admiralty, who contemplate erecting someting of this kind for the naval cadets at Dartmouth. The Advantage of these inclosed swimming places is stated to be their siza, cheapness, noth psy for water, and that they can bs used throughout the day. What public-spirited citizen ot Washington will start the enterprise bere, and thus carn the thanks of our perspiring and dust-grimed population, and the title of public benefactor, besides putting money in his purse? Water is plentiful, there are many good sites along our river front, the buildings need Bot be expensive at first, and that swimming schools for both sexes would be liberally pat- ronizea if the terms were moderate, as they ought to be, there is mo doubt.
