There is a email cloud 100 ing upeven now that gives some promise of such result. Within the last week two of the sons of Joseph Smith arrived here, to the pesition held by Brigham Young. One of these sons, David, was a posthu:nous child, acd it wes predicted of him by his father. sceorcing to Mormon tradition, that me should one day rule over them. There are a consid. ereble number of Smith Mormons scatterea through Llincis and fowa, and the Salt Lake Mormons sdmit the force of the prophecy m favor of David Smith, but they say be must come ir the reguisr way, “through the gate of the eburch.” The Bich is that the Smith Mermons reject polygamy, and some other crstmetive doctrines of the Oburch. The mother of David Smith is 2 woman of high spirit amd great force of character, and she utterly denies that her husband ever was a polygamist, or that it was introduced by his instrumectality. Just here springs up an acri- Monious contest that may end polygamy. Last Saturday night a meeting was beld among the leading Mormons, at which the Smith brothers and Brigham Young were present. The object of the meeting was to ascertain exactly whet the SmitMs are aimmg a‘. The question of polygamy came up, and one of the Mormon Elders told David that there were women now living in Salt Lake City who were walling to take cath that they occupied the position of wives to Jo eph Smith during bis lie. Brigham Young with muca vehe- mence of manoer dared the Smiths to contest for tbe leadership upon the anti-poiygamy issue, amd told them they were counting Bpon & rope of sand. Thus far the Smiths bave 2d BO plice open to them ia which to bold & peblic meeting, but the disaffected Walker Brothers pave offered them the use of one of their warehouses. Intelligent Mor- mons here express the opinion that the Smiths will make no headway until they put them- selves im full communion with the church on the doctrine of polygamy. They have no nu- cleus of organization, while the clique of as- tute polygamists who rule things bere com prebend fully the great power that results from centralization, and have acted through- outon that Knowledge. Yet it sees to me that the most immediate prospect of abating polyg- amy is througn this missionary movement of the Smith brothers. ‘Smith is everywhere revered amongst the ‘som much the same cervice that the name of Napoleon did to Lous in France. the Salt Lake Mormons seem to be fanatically devoted to the doctrine of polygamy, majority of them have terest Im maintaining it.
