EVENING STAR. MONDAY.... LOCAL NEWS. Wharf Improvements. Within the past few months many material improvements have been made along the river iret, Which, added to the gradual develop- ment of the plan of Commissioner Gunnell to oy en, grade and gravel the new (Kiver) street skirting the Potomac, affords increased com- mercial facilities, amd opens up a fature of enhanced prosperity for business enterprise in that section. venth streetwhar! was rented some months since by Mr. Thos. J. Galt. Tne wharf proper, ‘ich bad become very much dilapidated, has been enlarged and thoroughly remodeled by Mr. G., while the bed of the river on either side bas been asseseeee JULY 26, 1569. bus rendering it an easy matter for the Mount Vernon and Norfolk steamers, this being their lending and receiving piace, to find floating roem at the lowest tide. In addition to this pout being the entrepot of the above-named steamers, sailing vessels also enter here to dis- arge the large quantities of wood purchased tT. Galt m the prosecution of bis basi- mess. that of furnishing sawed and split woet for city consumption. Atmost daily cargoes are received, and in the quick- *st possible time cat up im'o small pieces ready for stove or furnace use. Mr. Gait bas at this point now one of the most complete steam s&Wing establishments to be seen in the Union. It Bas been divided into compart- ments, the most important of which is the s'eam sawing room, where there are two pow- *rtul machines of the latest patterns, capable of sawing and spliting thirty cords Caily. Tne ‘wood, atter being sawed and split, is also de. posited by machinery im the packing and haal- see Tooms, as may be desired. The machines by which the wood is sawed and split were wade by Messrs. Wm. M. Ellis & Bro., of this ty, ome of which (of powerfal strength) is the sevign of Mr. Galt bimself. A most complete team engine, of twenty-one horse power, at- sords the mouve power, uot ouly for driving the wood sawing and cuting machines, but also a very complete little corn and grist mill ap the upper story of the establishment. It appeared on investigation that the parties were man and wife, and that they form- erly resided near the Government Printing Office, and that the husband, Edward Edwards, but a few days since was released from the workhouse, where he bad been committed for disorderly conduct. On getting out he set about finding the whereabouts of bis wife, aud im this he succeeded yesterday morning, aud after a few moments consultation the wife agreed to take a walk with him. Amoug other things, the Record gives the following aphoriems” ot Dr. Ballard upon the relations of the atmosphere to health: First. That an increase of atmospheric tem- perature is rormatly associated with ar in- ‘crease of general sickness. Second. That a decrease of atmospheric temperature is normally associated with a diminution of general sickness ‘Third. That for the most part the increase or decrense of sickness is proportional in amovnt to the extent to which the atmos- pheric temperature rises or falls. Fourth. That it is an error to suppose (as is popularly held) that sudden changes in temperature are, (as @ rule) damaging the public health. A sudden change from cold to hot weather is indeed very camaging, but & sudden change from hot to cold is one of the most favorable circumstences that can occur when sickness is regarded broadly as respects a lsrge population. Fifth. That, remarkably enough, tbese in- Siuences are most marked in the directions I have mentioned in the colder seascn of the year, and more certain in the winter than in the summer. Sixtb. That rises and falls of temperatare are more certain and effectual in their spe- cial operation upon public health when at the same time the daily range of temperature is lessened than they are when the daily range is at the same time increasing sick. mess more certainly and markedly, and falls of temperature decreasing it more certainly and markedly. Seventh. That a fall of rain lessen: ness generally, sometimes immedi te times after a short interval, and that, asa rule, the reduction of general sickness is greater when the fall of rain is heavy than when it is light. Eight. it drought, on the other hand, tends to augment general sickness. Ninth. That wet weather in the summer season operates more cettainly in improving public health than it does in the winter season. ANOTHER FaTAL Love APFAIR.—A corres- pondent of the Baltimore American, writing from Rappabannock County, Va., says. About three years ago a Miss Butler, living with ber parents in Rappahannock County, Va, near the village of Woodville, received the atten- tions ofa well-to-do widower, named Newton Dennis, and it is said a matrimonial engage- ment was duly made between them. Dennis, it appears, in conrse of time, succeeded in making a mother of the young lady. without pheno complying with the engagement. le subsequently refused to marry her at all, and the brothers of the young lady, three in number, vowing vengeance, he caused them to be arrested ard bound over to keep the peace for twelve months. That period ex- Ppired a few days ago, when the brothers pro- ceeded to Woodville, each armed with a six- shooter. They encountered Dennis in the street, and opened fire upon him. Dennis was armed with a revolver, tut it contained only three loads, and these he discharged without effect. Tbe Butlers fired sixteen times—the parties being distant from each other about twenty feet. The last shot struck Dennis in the heart, and le fell dead. Toe Butlers immedintely fled to to the mountains, where they have since remained. detying cap- ture. No steps, however, have been taken to pursue them. Dennis leaves one child—a son — nearly grown. Tne DISAPPEARANCE oF INSECTS.—With the expectation of the curculio & majoriy ot destructive insects seem to infest different localities in the course, sometimes, of two or three years, at other times from five to ten years. The striped bug ba: with us nearly disappeared: not a single specimen of the steel-bine bug that was for two or three years so desiructive tothe grape foliage have We seen this season. There are also but few caterpillars to be found, which is especially Temarkable. The slug that feeds upon the Tose-leaves, completely skeletonizing them, are still as destructive Rs ever. but they too may disappear in a year or two. We do not attri- bute thesesingular facts mainly to the labors of insecttvorous birds. They may eat tne larvie of some of them, but by the time these birds make their appearance there isa pretty general supply of dainty food; and so that por- tiou of them which take their food on the wing, such as the swallow, martin. peewee, king-bird, &c.. they feed only in that way. What then is the cause of this change of locali- ty in these Insects? They do not become ex- nct or greatly diminished in number by the severity of winter. Has the two or three last unusually wet springs anything todo with it? On the contrary we believe they migrate from place to place, and will return again ina few years to plague us again. The curculio, the Worst pest of all, we believe is unkaown in Europe.
