Hatton is a young cclored man who was quite active here in the colored war meetings in the first years of the rebellion, and went from here As Sergeant-major of one of the colored regi- ments, berving until the close of the war. He was born in Prince Georges county, Md., and is a very shrewd young man, and it is thought will make s gocd member. Mr. James Holmes is @ Philadelphian, who came here about seven years since, and settled in the Fourth Ward, entering into the wholesale and Tetail produce business on New Jersey avenue and D street. Mr. Espey, the candidate for Assessor, in opposition to Mr. R. B. Owens, is an old citizen of Washington, residing on the corner of New Jersey avenue and L street, where he has kept a grocery store for years past. This ward was represenied during the past year by Messrs. Geo. Jaenemann, W. H. Nal- ley, and Robt. Ball in the Lower Board. Mr. Nalley bas been nominated for re-election by the “Ortizens,” with Geo. Savage and T. H. Regan . FIFTH WARD. The Republicans of the Fifth Ward held a mass meeting last evening at Uarroll Hail, to mceminate candidates for ward offices. J. L. Gatchell was chosen chairman. Sidney Her- bert, in view of the nominations about to be made, offered a resolution stating the sense of the meeting to be that a colored man should bz placed on the ticket. Mr. Herbert then stated that ithad been noised around that ten years from now was time enough for a colored man to go on the ticket. Henry Bradshaw was in favor of the spirit of the resolution, but was opposed to this agitation of the distinction on ‘accoumt of race or color John R. Dr. William Boyd’s Republican principles cannot be doubted, he having several years ago been convicted of running off slaves to the free States and sentenced to the Penitentiary, from which he was pardoned by ww; oO Dr. the late esident Lincoln. He 1s probably better known among the colored ple of the District than any other man im Washington. Sampson Netter is one of the best known col- ored residents of this city, having been raised in the Seventh Ward and bis character 1s above reproach.
